HAWAII.
AS l.NTERESTIN'U ILLUSTKATUD I.KCTUKK
OX TUK ISLANDS.
The lh st lecture of an illustrated
series on "Historical, Picturcecpii'
and Volcanic Hawaii" was delivered
at the Art Association room1, on
Pino street, last evening, by V. L.
Clarke of .Honolulu, member of the
Hawaiian Hoard of Genealogy. The
stereopticon views were thrown upon
a large screen, and while in them
selves affording an attractive enter
tainment, at the same timo gave the
audience a better understanding of
facts, scenes, localities and objects
of which the lecturer treated in
a vory interesting manner. Mr.
Clarke's long residence at the Isl
ands and his relations with the gov
ernment have enabled him to become
familiar with the history of the Ha
waiian people, from their primitive
condition down to the present time,
with their traditions, their aboriginal
theology and dciuonology, their
superstitious forms of government
and their social and domestic cus
toms, and the events which have
marked eras in their existence as a
nation. The first two views sliowcd
the .Sandwich or Hawaiian Islands
ns a group, with their situation in
the midst of the Pacillc Ocean, re
latively with the coasts of America
and Asia, tfith Australia and other
islands of tho Polynesian aichipe
lago and Japan. He gave a graphic
account of the last visit of Captain
Cook to Hawaii and the causes
which led to his death at the hands
of the natives. The monument which
has been erected on the spot where
Cook was killed was shown on the
screen ; also views of many points
of interest on the coast and among
the mountains of the interior of
Honolulu; the lolani palace and the
public buildings, and portraits of
tho royal family and the great
crater of Mauna Loa, besides many
other views .showing the peculiar
topography, formations and tho ricli
verdure of the islands. Tho views
are wortli seeing and tiic lecture is
wortli hearing. The next of the
series will be delivered to-morrow
night at the same place. The
tickets to the lecture admit the
holders to the exhibition of the Art
Association. Morning Call.
