at Nogalcs to death, arrived in this
city to-day. He was interviewed
about tho aflair which has excited
such universal inteiest throughout
tho United States and Mexico. Ho
paid ;
"Tho offenders aro Francisco Ay
vizo, a Colonel by graduation, and
.wo civilians named Benjamin Gu
tierrez and Roches, They wejc tried
by a court martial composed of two
Generals and iivo Colonels. They
wero selected from twenty-one ofli
ccrs, liko your American juries, and
I presided. They wcro furnished
with counsel and cveiy facility of
defense given, but tho cvidenco "was
against thorn, TJiogo men wcro
guilty of two crimes, namely i Kid
napping and invasion of friendly ter
ritory. The penalty of each is death,
and nothing remains but to execute
tho law and shoot them. They have
appealed to tho President, and aro
now in jail at Guaymas". Tho appeal
of tho United States for clemency
will be considered, but it is doubtful
H Colonel Arvizo will have his gont
onco commuted, This is not his
first ofl'ensc, and he has a long and
bad record. Thcro is no diveisity of
opinion about the caso in Mexico.

Afghanistan. Continuing, tho paper
says: "Wo can only supposo Umt
England cherishes tho intention of
becoming, and hopes by tho present
disorder in Afghanistan to becomo,
mistress of tho country. In that
caso Russia would demand -serious
guarantees that England's proximity
would not embarrass Russia's posi
tion in Central Asia, nnd if England
refused to give tho guarantee Russia
would take measures regarding tho
Afghan frontier ptovinces which she
deemed expedient, and would not bo
concerned whether they wevo ngrcc
nble to England or not."
A little girl onco said she would
be very glad to go to heaven, be
cause tlicy have plenty of preserves
there. On being cross-examined,
she took down her catechism, and
triumphantly read: "Why ought
the saints to love God?" Answer:
"Because He makes, preserves, and
keep them."
Another operation will bo mado
upon the Crown Prince's throat
Wednesday. Dr. Mackenzie will
arrive here from London on Tues
day. He intends to again use forceps
to reduce the growth on the Prince's
larynx. In tho meantime tho Prince
has submitted to treatment of chloral
of potassium gargles nnd in exterior
application of an ointment of iodide
of potassium. Ho is still caused
great pain in swallowing. The
doctors aro confident that at the
next operation they will succeed in
effecting the entire removal of the
growth, whioh is now the size of a
pea.
