The San Francisco Call of Janu
ary I4tb, has the following: The
marriage of Mr. John B. Hopkins to
Miss Julia M. Hogan took place last
Tuesday, by Rev. B. Calzia, at St.
Joseph's Church, in San Jose. The
groom is a son of Rev. John G,
Hopkins of Abergavenny, Wales.and
is manager of the Ookala Plantation,
150 miles from Honolulu. He was
formerly superintendent and suigeon
of the Queen's Hospital at Honolulu.
The bride is well known in Napa as
the daughter of Mrs. Ellen A. Ho
gan. Owing to recent deaths in the
family of Mr. Hopkins the wedding
waB strictly private. Miss Eliza
beth M. Hogan acted as bridesmaid
and Mr. Sebasticn B. Hogan as
groomsman.
Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins arrived on
the Australia January 9th and left
for Hawaii on the Kinau two days
later.

THE YACHT QASCO.
The American yacht Casco arriv
ed in port last evening, twenty-nine
days from Tahiti. Experienced
calm and variable winds with pleas
ant woather. The party on bourn
consists of Mr. Robert Louis Stev
enson, the uulhor, anl wife, Mrs.
Thomas Stevenson, Mrs. Lloyd Os
borne and maid. The Casco will
remain in port s-ome time and then
sail for San Francisco.
A PLEASANT GATHERING.
The annual election of staff and
field officers of the second battalion
of the Hawaiian Vnlunlceis, was
held last evening; at the armory of
the Honolulu Riiles, with the follow
ing result:

Afterwards, the newly elected and
retiring officers were invited by Col.
Ashford to partake of refreshments.
Adjourning to a sufficiently spacious
apartment of the Armory, Col. Ash
ford, officers of the First and Sec
ond Battalions and a few special
quests, sat down to a dainty spread.
W4ien the banquet was fully under
way, toasts to "the King" "His
Majesty's Ministeis," "the Hawai
ian Volunteers," ''Our Colonel,"
"the Press," "the Ladies," "the
newly elected and rctiiing officers,"
were made and responded to elo
quently. The party terminated at
an agreeable hour with the singing
of the Hawaiian National Anthem
and withj three cheers for the Col
onel. FIRE AT KAWAIAHAO SEMINARY.
About twenty minutes before bix
o'clock last evening the bell from
the Central tower rang out an alarm
of fire. Jt was at the Kawaiuhao
Female Seminary. Some passengers
on the slicet cars in passing the in
stitution noticed smoke issuing from
the roof of the building. They at
once notified the teachcis at the
school nud an alarm was tinned in
by telephone. Assistance was soon
nt hand and the lite which had com
menced to cet smiie headway was
put out with buikitf ot iwilcr, the
services of the department not be
ing required. It occurred m the
attic, where was u row of four
shelve?, in front of which utood a
washstaud. The front of the bhelvcs
was coercd nith a curt-.'in and the
flic started on the thud bliclf. It
ran up the side of the wall and com
municated witli the shingles of the
roof. Fiiollarshal White made an ex
amination of the place after the liic,
and it looked to turn as if someouu
had Iil'oii smoking a cigaict;, and
getting frightened had thioun it i to
thu she If, where it communicated
with the curtain. Everything was
charred around tho spot where the
fire communicated. This 1b the
third lire at the Seminary. The lust
time some dirty rags ami a ciaictto
were found near where thu fire start
ed. On Tuesday Chief liugimer
SVilson and Fuo Marshal White
made a thorough inspection of thu
building.

The New York "Sun's" Washing
ton special says: A Berlin dispatch
announcing that there was great
satisfaction in the German capitnl
over the announcement by the Am
erican Government that the United
States had no interests in Samoa
that warranted it in maintaining a
coutioversy with the German Gov
ernment, and that tho latter would
probably send re-enforcements to
Samoa, had been received. It is
supposed here to refor to 601110 dis
patch from Secretary Bayard not in
cluded in the official correspondence
already made public, and is per
haps, later than nny of the publish
ed correspondence
The activity of the Navy Depart
ment in preparing thieo or four
cruisers for sea service wjtl n mark

the Sainoan affair to indicate that a

An old bachelor died recently in
