THE ORGAN RECITAL.
A I.ftrci AuiUuuru and a IVell-rcn-ilcii'U
I roc ram inc.
To a stranger visiting Honolulu,
the interior of the Kaiunakapili
Church, for Hawaiians, is a total
surprise. In these far away is
lands one would baldly expect
to find such a building so nice
ly fitted up, and with s-uch a
magnificent oigan. Many of the
larger cities of the States cannot
boast of such an instrument. A
most enjoyable evening was spent
at this chin eh on the occasion of the
eighth organ recital by Mr. Wray
Taylor. A large audience was pre
sent ami the programme was well
gotten up. The sacred ch.uacter of
the building was observed and ap
plause was limited to looks of pleas
ure. Aud novv for the programme.
Place aux dames, Mis. F. W.
Glade, evidently not a stranger to a
Honolulu audience, sang with a rc-
maikably sweet and well-trained
voice, a solo, "Come unto Him."
It was a delightful piece of vocaliza
tion. Miss voii Holt accompanied
on the. oigan with notict able skill,
in fact, seemed quite at home at the
large instrument. Mr. E. J. G.
Brvaut undertook a dillicult task in
singing the reiit-itive, Comfort
Ye," and aria, "Every Valley"
from Handel's Messiah, but he was
equal to the occasion, displacing a
voice that has evidently been train
ed in a good school.
Mr. Paul lsenberg, Jr.. picscnts
a commanding picsence on the plat
form. He t-ang in Gei man aud has
a poweiful but exceedingly pleasant
baritone voice which he uses well.
Miss von Holt accompanied him.
Mr. Taylor played six solos on the
in gau iu all. In a fantasia an imita
tion of the bagpipes was very amus
ing, and the "111110 Bells of Scot
land," on the carillon, and an Irish
air were catching. The whole of the
numbers were well pl.iyed, the cr
ganUt having perhct control of the
massive oigan. The choir of the
church, all natives, reudeied two
anthems with decidedly uood taste,
the sopiano solo in tbe (list one be
ing well sung by a young girl. It
is veiy evident that the Hawaiians
are a musical race. The writer
hopes to bear annth r recital before
leaving the inlands.
