OSlliUBI ylliW B ' Sjj!l'l'!S Kr'" FRIDAY, DlCC. 20, 1F89. Dec. 18, 1880. p- IS-"" Hit I We yivc place to-day to several correspondents, some of whom! let ters have been awaittnR insertion during the past week. There are ugly rumors alloat about a large and deep opium scandal. The Government ought to institute an investigation, and "hew to the line, let the chips fall where they may." If the Mechanics1 Uuion adopt the ticket given elsewhere, or some thing like it, a strong ticket, man for man, would be required to beat it. As it stands, indeed, it would pass muster as a compromise be tween extreme adtninistrationists and extreme oppositionists. THE MINISTERIAL PLATFORM. Editor IJur.i.ivriN: There is much to be praised in the govern mental policy and measures, formu lated by the Minister of the Interior for himself and his colleagues. But the quesion at issue is not simply "Docs the people want the present Cabinet to have the administration of affairs for the next biennial period?" There is a broader ques tion than that, "What kind of a government does the people want?" The present administration has some acts to repent of as' well as some measures to advocate. What they have done or failed to do, presents some further issues of vital import ance, not touched in their published platform. Is the present Cabinet, in inviting the suffrages of the people for their retention in olliee, prepared to pledge themselves to an honest and impartial administration of public trust? "Will white men in the gov ernment olllces or in the govern ment secrets, if guilty of collusion and fraud in their ofllcial duties, be put under the ban, their record in vestigated, and their tenure of olliee terminated, as summarily as some young Hawaiian Custom House olli cials were dealt with? Or will those who arc under the protection of the present set of political leaders be al lowed to make their pile without any embarrassing inquiries? Will Ilawai ians, if on examination found quali fied, be put in places of public trust, or relegated to back seats only i Many Protestant Ilawaiians think they have goodreasons to demand that this shall be neither a white man's government, nor a patron of Popery. Their children by regula tion of the Board of Education arc corralled in the public schools to be catechised by the Catholic priest, in spite of remonstrances from teachers and parents. And other public in stitutions are going the same waj Every boy in the Government school at the Leper Settlement, be his par ents Protestant or Mormon, lias been baptized by the Catholic priest. The Queen's Hospital has appar ently come under similar conditions of management. The issue is made by the policy pursued by present Government ofllcials, members of the Board of Education and the Board of Health. Arc the public institutions ot the country, support ed at the public expense, to be used by any religious organization for proselyting purposes? Or are they to be administered as unsectarian Christian institutions in an impar tial and liberal spirit? Hawaii Ponoi. DOINGS IN KONA. There is some pilikia among the dogs in and about Kaawaloa, Ha waii. In many a kennel wbeic formerly was a big "dorg," now nothing but an aching void. It is no unusual occurrence on going abroad in the early morning to find a canine lying stark and still' by the roadside. Kona coffee is plentiful this sea son. Harvesting operations are about ended. If the Buu.i'.tin man would send a reporter to the Kailtia District Court and keep him there, the "dear renders" would hear of some doings that would make them open their eyes very wide. And if they were suitors, they would open their pock ets, loo, unless they happened to be of the right nationality. Jt is not true, however, that the Knilua ball of justice bears a big placard, "Xo Portuguese need apply for justice here." 'Whoever said so must be a malicious croaker, for hasn't the judiciary as well ae all else in Kona been reformed ? People who are so unfortunate as to be interested in the foreign mails have a great aloha for the steamer W. 0. Hall this week, by reason of her hastening back from Ptinaliiu to connect with the outgoing steamer for Sail Francisco on Friday. The measles have about closer! their contract at Napoopoo and vicinity. There is only one case to be disposed of at this date, and that one, by last accounts, was con valescent. Kaawaloans and Kcalakckuans are talking sugar plantation, Hope it won't be a case of "much cry and little wool." There is no reason why Kona should not lie a sugar Auction Sales by Jams F. Morgan.
