A PLUCKY MEMBER. representative Knuibeti's piiin ary speech in the l.cgMatiuc ot 181)0 was remarkable foi candor. The addrcs-in ieply to the KiugS speceli was under discussion. .Mr. KnuiUen was one of tlie comniiltee appointed to prepuie thoieply, and his signature was attached to the document. Notwithstanding all that had been said againt the repl in the prolonged discussion, lie still endorsed and stood by it, because he believed it spoke the truth ; and he had ihe eourae to stand alone when the vote was taken. 1 lis con victions may have bueu light or they may have been wiong. That is not the question. They were hi eon-.-eientioiis conviction", and lie had the manliness and pluck to be true to them, although in the Until action lie was isolated Bud alone. In these degenerate tunes and this degener ate country, when and where policy lakes precedence of honesty, and to be frank and outspoken i detri mental to worldly success, the ctop ping up of a man of Mr. Knudsun's chat actor is a grateful lelief Irom the dreary aitiliciality oi the general environment. EHCOURACE THE OAHU RAILROAD. The Oahu Railway is a fact, and not a fiction. Two years ago the Legislature passed a bill for the en couragement of this enture, and under it twelve miles of track bae been constructed. For many months past daily passenger and fi eight trains have legularly run between Honolulu and the tenonitis at J'.wa. At the lime of the passage of the bill, many people peihaps most of the community thought the railway would never lie constructed, or at least not for many ,eais to come. Not only timiijtt, but - id so. Nevertheless, there is ihe railio.nl, andthcteaie the ttaiiih daily tun ning over it. Formidable opposi tion blocked the way, but the daunt less energy of Mr. Dillingham, the piojector, just cut light through it; and to-day the railway is, and bas in en for months p'ist a f.tct, a posi tive fact. The lestills are largely indeed, iirtuily- piospeclhe. The develop ment of lesoutces most eeitainly to finite has only commenced; but ic gaidless of this, the prctent and apparent elfcels ate decidedly satis taetoiy fiom a public standpoint. The people of Honolulu and visitors 1 1 oia the etliet islands and other ifiiinlries now have an available health and plcasitte lesort which they freely Use. A considerable population along the line have ready access to the capital ctt,v of the kingdom ami easy means of turns porting tlicit pioduue. to mailed. Hesides these efletts inuring to the advantage ol the people, the Cov et utneiil is brnetlted 113- the ineicwsc of the tualilu value of the ptopeity along the Hue of the railway, fn nhoti, enough is apparent to demon strate the soundness of the public policy which tlie Inst Legislatuio adopted in relation to tliesclietne. It remains to lie seen what en couragement the Legislature now in Misaiou will aflotd for thu e.teniion ot (he line. No doubt It will be Uncial. Ilolli paities in the House are pledged to a policy of libetal encouragement to all such cnlcr ptises. It is tlie intention of the Oahu Hallway and Land Company to continue the extension of the. Hue until thecircultof tlie island is com plete, provided the Legislature nffoids Hiiillcient encouiagcment. Jleyond the present toi minus are "ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY." ElMIOll lk'I.lETIM While the people have a right to expect, at least, a fair, honest day's work from the wise and otherwise gentlemen now assembled in the Legislative hall of the Kingdom, we have not, l hold, any moral tight to demand or even desire that they or any one of them shall lie om w orKed. it was with pain and alarm that I read in Mtutdny's issue that Noble CoiuwJI, as a member of the com mittee to draft a reply to His Males tv's speech, had said that he had not had time to tend the ieply caie fully befote he signed it. Here we have a gentleman in the full bloom of manhood, on the fourth day of the session complaining that he had not time to even caielessly road the reply, much more to lake part 111 Us composition. The other member of the com mittee are entitled to our deepest sympathies for not having had the acumen, etudi'ian and intelligence for which the atoiesaid Noble is so justly celebrated, to aid and assist them in fi.iinniir the leplj. This canal ls intended to chain the pie sent output of water fiom Waioiama and conduct il into tlie Waiakea liver, through which means the sund beach extending I10111 Ililo to Waia ke.t will be perfectly lice from the constant moving course of Waio iama, thenco, making another picas aut drive between these two locali ties.
