Four police olllcers raided tlio
National Hotel ntLcnvcmoutli, Kan
sas, nml carried away nil the winu
and glnsswnre that was to bo used
tit a banquet to Allen G. Tliuriimn
by the Bandana Club. A largo
crowd followed the patrol wagon to
the city jail. Although it was pro
tested that the wine belonged to tho
club and not to the hotel, the thirty
gallons of wine were emptied into
tho sewers.
The policemen who made tho
seizure were arrested on the charge
of larceny, and no re followed bc
foro the magistrate by a crowd of
COO men. The mob became so up
roarious Hint the policemen had to
be removed to the jail, a. large crowd
following and shouting, "Hang
them!" "Shoot them!" Tho po
licemen were released on 81500 bail
each.
Twenty deputy sheriffs were
sworn in and took possession of the
National Hotel, with orders to ad
mit no one not having a ticket.
The president of the board of police
issued an order to the police that if
an attempt was made to serve the
wine at the. banquet they were to
raid the place at once. The mem
bers of the Bandana Club . then an
nounced that they would fight for
their rights.
At a late hour no trouble had oc
curred. The deputy sheriffs bad
the hotel in charge, and the ban
quet, with wine, was iu progress,
the room in which it was held being
closed to all except those holding
tickets or wearing a deputy sheriff's
badge. No attempt has been made
by the police to raid the banquet
ball.

Students of the University of
Michigan, Ann Arbor, got into a
disgraceful and fatal conflict with a
body of militia. The students fell
in behind the company, much to its
annoyance, and Sergeant Granger
ordered the company to charge the
students.
Then ensued one of the fiercest
hand-to-hand conflicts ever witness
ed here. Coming to the corner of
Liberty ant Division streets, the
students had closed up behind, and
t'he cry "charge" was heard. The
soldiers had no bayonets, but they
clubbed their rillcs and hammered
the students right and left The
latter were armed with stones and
fence pickets, and for ten minutes
the clubbing and stone-throwing
went on, and scarcely one who took
part escaped with a whole skin.
The police finally separated the
combatants. living Dennison, son
of F. L. Dennibon of Toledo, djed

Gnmger was badl hurt and several
students were seriously injured.
There is a dispute as to which be
gan the hostilities.

ITEMS.
On the recommendation of Gen
eral Miles, the War Department has
ordered troops from several points
in the vicinity of the Sioux reserva
tion to take the field at once. There
will doubtless be a repetition of the
scene enacted several years ago,
when General Sheridan massed a
large force of United States troops
near Fort Reno, Ind. T., and pre
vented a threatened outbreak.
General John Moore, U. S. A.,
retired, on a visit to Washington
said that "the stimulus which the
McKinley law has given the mining
industries of tho new Northwest, by
increasing tho duty on lead ore, can
hardly be overestimated. In the
region of the Cajur d'Aleno many of
tho mines which were found unpro
fitable heretofore are now open and
doing business and giving employ
ment to many idle laborers at 8!i
to $4 per day." As a consequence,
many now smelling mills will bo
erected iu tho Northwest, particu
larly in Montana.
