FRIDAY, NOV. 28, 1890.
An interesting table is given in
this isBue, showing the trade of San
Francisco. It will be seen that
among the few export increases over
last year, that to the Hawaiian Isl
ands is the immense amount of near
ly a million. This fact must prove
a powerful argument to the Pacific
Coast and to Congress in behalf of
the retention and enlargement of
the treaty.
To-day marks another year since
the recognition of Hawaiian Inde
pendence by the Governments of
Great Britain and France. Shortly
after this eventful action by these
great nations, the United States
acquiesced in and confirmed our
independence in an official letter.
Since that time the independ
ence and autonomy of the
Government of Hawaii has been
preserved intact. The principle of
independence has permeated deeply
all classes of our citizens to an ex
tent that each and every political
party lakes especial care to insert a
plank in its platform emphasizing
the principle and pledging itself and
its representatives to an unqualified
support thereof. May Hawaiian In
pendence long flourish, nourished by
patriotism at home and justly pro
tected by the friendly powers abroad.

Further Improvements to be
Surrounding Sottlomonts and
Small InduBtrios.
A. Toarl City Investment MenB In
terest In Advance.
The many thousands of dollars
which have been spent in improve
ments or invested by the projectors
are to be soon supplemented by
other important improvements which
will open up for small holdings the
whole of the beautiful peninsula
spreading out like an extensive gar
den into the deep waters of the har
bor. The harbor is overlooked by
tho best building sites of Pearl Citj'.
The peninsula is well wooded and is
something over one thousand yards
wid.
The management of the Oahu
Railway Co. has already had a new
route surveyed and preparations are
being made for extending a branch
railway along the centre of the pen
insula for a distance of about one
and a half miles. This will make
the entire peninsula accessible to
both passenger and freight traffic.
The peninsula itself is most desir
able for small farms, vegetable gar
dens and, along the shore line, for
suburban residences. The question
of irrigation there is already settled,
as two fine artesian wells now fur
nish all the water necessary or which
will be hereafter required for farm
or garden purposes and an extension
of the pipes of the Pearl City water
works will give an ample supply for
household purposes.
A further enterprise is to be car
ried out pn the rich leasehold lands
surrounding Pearl City. The scanty
provisions for small holdings, in
and around Honolulu, mokes it
Imperative that the increasing white
labor classes growing up in our
midst be supplied with cheap lands
upon which small livings can be
made. Already many applications
have been made from the crowded
suburbs of Honolulu, and it has
been determined to hereafter sublet
to this class of residents small farms
in the leasehold lands surrounding
the fee simple grant upon which
stands Pearl City.
Every small industry thus estab
lished, every iron rail laid upon the
beautiful peninsula below the town
site, every extra ton of freight that
is added, while adding nothing to
the desirability and beauty of the
natural landscape, will add speedily
and permanently to the value and
interest bearing power of every town
lot that is laid out and sold at Peail
City.
The beginnings of a fine suburban
city are already established. The
location and the outward view are
all that can be desired. But the
main merit of Pearl City is still to
be recorded. Its health-giving pro
perties are unsurpassed. The bouy
ant trade wind, from which Hono
lulu is mostly shut off, blows over
the site twelve months out of the
year, giving without intermission a
salubrious and healthful climate,
free from the oppressive heat and
occasional miasma of the metropolis.
Those who have thus far invested
in lots at Pearl City some twenty
five of Honolulus best young busi
ness men have purchased for fu
ture homes, some of whom will
build next spring or even earlier.
Every young man who has n few
hundred dollars which can bo spared
during tho next three or four years,
will be able to secure at Pearl City
a home for which he would have to
pay as many thousand dollars in or
around Honolulu, A glance at tho
pioimred maps of Saturday's great
sale will disclose exactly what lots
