Hammond, in his Zeal for Hie over throw of uieu inade creeds and dog- mas, unintentionally we presume, overlooked us as preachers of the everlasting gospel in its fulness and our organization as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ, when he made the unqualified and' misleading statements in asking and answering the following very important qil.-'s lions: ho pnactics or proclaims the gospel plan of salvation as given by Christ and pleached by the Apos tles?" He repeats the question, "But who preaches this gospel?" And answers positively aud emphati cally, "None." He then says: "Go inloany of our churches, look around, but few Bibles are to be seen in the hands of the congregation. An elo quent essay carefully read is attract ing their attention. The subject of the essay is not, 'What shall I do to be saved?' It is an essay on astro noray, botany, 'Is the Bible true?' or some similar subject. Doctrines of men are taught for the command ments of God. A large salary is Hie sure evidence that God has called the man to be pastor of the chuich. God calls loudest where the biggest salan is offered. Is it not the case thai too many preachers are afraid t ) preach the doctrines of the Bible lest their salary be diminished? Where are tie pastors of the churches who command believers in Christ to be immersed for the remission of sins as did Ananias'" The abovfc statements I am glad I" say are only applicab e to the pupiiim men-made and so ca led Cuii-ii-o churches and their ministers. 15 a we as ministers of the true church o Jesus Christ and preachers of the whole gospel, without purse or scrip. do most positively and emphatically deny the charges set forth by I)r Hammond, as they are untruthful when applied to us as ministers or as a church. For we claim to be the restoreel and Reorganized Church ol Jesus Christ aud we defy I)r Hammond or any other man to show any discrepancy whatever in organization, doctrines or practice, between us and the church orgHiiiZ' d by Christ and His apostles. We therefore demand mat Dr. Hammond as a Bible believer, a christian gen tleman, and a lover of Christ put into practice Christ's commands. "As ye would that men should do to you do ye also to them likewise -" Luke G : y 1 and either publicly retract the above statements which are an in justice to us as ministers and as the Church of Jesus Chiist, or meet u in Christian debate and allirm his statements with Bible proofs, or I fear he will be branded as one who preaches by precept and not by ex ample. Dr. Hammond, the world is full of precept men ; show your low for Christ by doing us justice, or meeting us and proving your asser tions true. In conclusion we will ask some questions andoffira reward. l)r Hammond aud our Advent friend, Mr. Burgess, and other Protestant are down on the Popes and claim to stick to the Bible for their guide, ami yet they must turn awuy from lhe Bible and look to the Pope of Rom for their authority and example to believe in and establish churches without apostles and prophet as ollicers, and to leave out the dud rim of laying on of hands lor tl.e gilt ol the Holy Ghost. For their Bilil. recognizes only a church organized with these ollicers, who were pui there by God himself as the follow ing passages: 1 Cor. 12:28. "Ami God hath set some in the church, first apo-tles, secondarily prophets,'" and again Kphcsians 4: 11, 12, 13. "And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edify ing of the body of Chiit (me Church) till we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowl edge of the Son of God into a per fect man, unto the measure ol the stature of the fulness of Christ." This unity and perficiion has not been attained to by the churches of to-day, therefore apostles and pr -phets are necessary and sip old lie in the church for the work of the ministry, as also the laying on of hands and all other doctrines aud gifts which it pleased God to put in the church as you will tind.iu Ileb. C:2 "Of the doctrine of baptisms aud of laying on of hands," and again in Acts 8:17 "Then laid they their hands on them and they receiv ed the Holy Ghost," and also in Acts 19:0 "And when Paul had laid his hands upon them the Holy Ghost came upon them." The be loved disciple John says in his second epistle and ninth verse: "Whosoever transvessel b and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ he hath both the Father and the Son." Why will people follow and obey the example of the Popes of Rome instead of Christ? Only those who live in stone houses can afford to throw stones. It is said that glass houses have a tendency to blindness. Judge ye. To any per son who will give us one direct com mand of Christ or His Apostles stut ing that apostles and prophets and the laying on of Inn ds for lift' gift of the Holy Ghost are no longer neces sary, and therefore done, an ay with, we will pay the sum of $."iM as a re ward. We shall wait patiently for book, chapter ami verse, and also for Dr. Hammond's reply. Eldkk A. Haws, of the Reorganized Chinch of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Honolulu, Oct. 2, 1891.
