Eoitou Bl'li.ktix : v As there appears to lie a little mis understanding as to the meaning of pibroch, may I ask you to publish the following, which is taken from Grove's Dictionary of .Music and Musicians, a very high authority in the musical world, Pibroch is de rived from the Gaelic piinireivid, a pipe tune. It means a scries of variations for the bagpipe, founded on a theme called Hie ui lur. Pib rochs are the highest form of bag pipe music, and are often very dilli cult to execute properly. The varia tions, generally three or four in number, increase in dillieulty and speed uutil the composition concludes with a vreaiduidh, or quick move ment. Like all bagpipe music, pib rochs are not written in any proper scale, and it is impossible to note them down correctly " for any other instrument, owing to the peculiarly imperfect tuning of the bagpipe, and particularly owing to the pres ence of an extra note between F and F sharp, a peculiarity which is also found in the Alpenhotn. Pibioehs are generally of a warlike character, including marches and dirges ; they often bear the names of various historical an1 legendary events. Thus "The Raid of Kil elirist". is ascribed to Macdonald of Glengarry's piper, who composed and performed this pibroch in the year 1003 during the burning of a church with its wholo congregation ; and "Failte Phroinsa," the Prince's Salute, was composed by John Mac Intyre, piper to Menzies of Menzies,. on the lauding of the Pretender in 1715. In another work I find that the pibroch is muMc played on the bag pipe, which has a wonderful power iu exciting the martial instincts and hilarity of the Highlanders. Its rhythm is so irregular, and its notes in the quicker parts so much jumbled together, that a stranger has dilli eulty in following the modulations or reconciling his ear to tliein. The earliest mention of the rJlitarv music of the bagpipe is in lo'J I nt the bat tle of lJulrinnes. There :n appro priate pibioehs, belonging ij various clans and districts. I enclose you, as a specimen, the first part of the uilar ol a pibroch. It is interesting, as showing the "warblers" or grace notes, in which good pipers excel. ' . WliAY TaYI.OK. The foregoing letter was received when the discussion to which it be longs was going on, but a mass of other correspondence previously rc ceived pushed it out of its appro priate place. Ed. PlGS!
