Admiral Irwin aud other olliccra of the navy yard were in attendance, as were also many relatives and friends from elsewhere, including Col. A. Powell, Cant. Pool of the Piedmont, A. S. Carman and U. A. Williams, formerly of the navy. I he floral pieces were as numer ous and as beautiful as we have ever seen at a funeral in Vallejo aud the designs included anchors, pilot wheels, etc. Appropriate music waa furnished by a quartet consisting of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Breed, Misg Anna Cassady and Prof. Green. Rev. Joseph Ham ilton made a few suitable remarks dwelling upon the noble traits and exemplary character of the de ceased, and cautioning all to live well that they may die well. Ihen the brethren of the mystic tie, G. A. Bergwall worthy master, per formed their solemn and beautiful rites. A very large procession of the, people sorrowfully followed the body to Union Cemetery, where it was placed in the receiving vault. Tle pall-bearers were ; Geo. Rounds, James Top ley, H. D. Captain George Gedge, son of the late Admiral John Gedge of the royal navy, wa9 born at Yar mouth, England, on the 18th of Januarv, 1819. His elder brother, John Gedge, followed his father's profession and became a commander iu the royal navy at an early age, but subsequently resigned and set tled in New Orleans, soon becoming chief justice of the supreme court of 'Louisiana and grand master of the grand lodge of Masons. George Gedge became identified with the profession of his father .mid after brilliant success was, lefose he reached his majority, iu command of a large troop ship on duty among the Australia colonies. While the East India company's naval service was at the height of its proficiency, Captain Gedge held a captain's commission at an early age and saw much active service both in India and afterwards in China during the rebellion and bravely maintained the reputation of his illustrious father. His life in Australia and subsequently in New Zealand, where for a long time he was held a prisoner ' among the Maories, reads like a tale of the old romances. He came to California early in the forties and was more or less associated with mercantile and mining matters for many years, all of which were unlortunately dis astrous. He was one of the pioneers of the Coinatoek Jode, where he located many claims and will be well remembered by all the early pioneers of that district, many of whom are now millionaires. In 1809 he en tered the service of the Southern Pacific company and has since then commanded many of their steamers. Up to the time of the unfortunate explos(ou of the steamer Julia, which he commanded, he enjoyed the best of heaRb, but haa rapidly failed since consequent to the injuries he received. Besides his widow Captain Gedge leaves six sons, via: Harry, Frank, George, William, Donald and Norman, and two daughters, Mrs. Capt. Fuller of Honolulu and Mrs. George T. Mc Reynolds of Vallejo, besides numer ous grandchildren and one great grandson. Vallejo Weekly- limes. WORTHY OF A TRIAL.
