The most important perquisite for re
porters is that known lis "lineage."
Daily nowspajjers, for example, havo
rccognizel correspondents in ncirly ev
ery town of any import;uico throughout
tho cotiutry. A reporter living in ono of
theso places, and connected with a local
newspaper, may bo apiwinted corres
pondent for a dozen or even more jour
nals. All events of importance have, of
course, to be attended for his own pajcr,
and should nnythiug occur of suflicipnt
interest to justify notico in tho papers
he represents, ho writes a report and for
wards it by telegraph or by train.
From each pajier ho receives tho cost
of tho telegram and is paid for his re
port at so much jier line, varying in dif
ferent towns between one ieniiy and
twopence per lino. Some of the London
papers pay as much as threeienco per
Hue, and in tho case of matters of un
usual iinjwrtanco or value tho leading
provincial newspapers will sometimes
pay a like amount. By tlds means it is
no unusual thing for a smart man to
make as much aa fivo pouuda in a single
night.
In a good district a reporter looks for
ward to doubling his weekly income by
"lineage" alone. Even when not the rec
ognized corresiKindent of any paiwr, ho
makes a considerable addition to his
earnings by "lineiige." Take, for ex
ample, an interesting event coming to
tho knowledge of tho reporter some
morning. Ho writes out' a telegraphic
message and wires a paragraph to tho
principal evening papers'. A special re
duced charge is mado for press messages.
Up to 0 o'clock in tho evening scventy
tlvo words can bo sont over tho wires for
ono shilling, and ono hundred words
after 0 o'clock for the eamu amount,
Every repetition of the message costs
twopence.
From each paper which inserts his
paragraph tno enterprising Bcnbo re
ceives half a crown or thrco shillings
and sixpence, usually tho hitter sum.
So, taking it that ho bends lus news to
twelyo newspapers, tho cost of tho tele
grams would bo threo shillings and fcen
pence, and if tho report wore used l3
nine out of tho twelve papers ho would
receive (taking as a moderate estimate
that ho would bo paid half a crown by
each) 1 2s. Od. Deducting tho cost of
tho telegrams it will bo neon that ho
clears nearly a sovereign by the trans
action. The risk is small, for any spicy
item of news told in an interesting way
is always welcomo, to tho evening pa
pers especially. If only two papers were
to insert and pay for his report ho would
still bo a gainer.
In tho largo cities and towns there aro
men known as "penny-a-liners," uncon
nected with any particular newspaper,
who mako a decent income by keeping a
watchful eyo for items of news which
may escape- tho observation of tho ordi
nary reporter. Any terrible calamity in
a district is a golden liarvest to the
bcribes. A railway accident
, iuuii;i
explosion or startling
mtirdor moans
pounds, shillings and pence to tho re
porter. Another source of profit to tho
"Knights of tho Pencil" is shorthand
writing in tho local law courts. In many
towns tho reporters aro tho oidy comje
tent shorthand writers, and to their lot
fall the shorthand notes whicli from time
to time aro reqnired by solicitors and
other people. London Tit-Bita.
After tho Afiplrs.
A gentleman who some years ago had
occasion to take a long journey through
tho Caucasus was accompanied by a ser
vant and a guide, who told him many
stories of tho country stories of danger
and peril in that bear frequonted forest
land. Once Stepan, tho guide, and n
friend of his had observed an applo tree
well laden with fruit, borne seven or
eight vends from their villago in tho for
est. It stood unclaimed of man, almost
tho only relic of some prosperous Tsoher
kess village. Stepnii and his friend ar
ranged to meet at tho tree ono morning
eariy and Hhnre the fruit.
When Stepan camo near tho tree ho
saw some ono already engaged in throw
ing tho apples down. Thinking his
friend was trying to steal a march on
him, the irate Stepan heaped all manner
of abuse ou him, aud at last, getting no
answer, fairly yelled with rage, and bo
gnu to throw things into tho tre.
Then tho bhowi-r of applus ceaned, and
with a grulf snort a lingo old bear camo
tumbling out of tho tree, almost ou top
of tho twitied villager. As usual iu
such caKes, Bruin was iuit as much
frightened as tho man, and shambled olf
as (piickly as possible, leaving tho npplea
to Stepan mid his friend. Youth's Com
panion. Valoo of Ilonetfty.
There is no compensation for lock or
loss of honor. I have been it tried again
and again. There is no sulwtitute for it.
Whoever sells a fraction of it for wealth
. or preferment begins to inherently de
generate. The end is death. Can yon
measure or weigh that word when ap
plied to tho Boulr Honesty, simple hon
esty, is tho lcst policy in dealing with
ourselves, with our children, with our
neighbors, or with things: I tnuinlor
that tho physician iu charge of ono of
tho largest asylums for tho insane said n
fow years ago in his nnnnal report:
"Alwvo nil things deal honestly with tho
insane. Do not ou any account under
take to decejvo them. A liar can only
work mischief with ii diseased mind,
The truth may bo hard enough for them
to bear, but a falsehood is cruelty. Thoy
need trust and confidence. Fidth in
others is healing." I think this is a uni
versal law, Do honest, especially to tho
young and tho weak. Mary E. Sjiencer
iu St. Louis Glolio-Democrat.
