WHAT SHALL WE DO WITH WASTE
LAND?
Kditok Bulletin:
If auy of your readers, who own
lots of waste, salty or sandy land,
and have little hope of ever utilizing
it, will refer back to previous edi
tions of the Bulletin - to the coiumus
on " Divorsiued Industries " and
notice the able account on the Cocoa
nut (in which the writer clearly
showed his acquaintance with his
subject), they will llnd the question
partly solved. Plant them with
cocoanut.
The -copoanut will grow where
hardly anything else will. In the
South Sea Islands, they actually
grow right in the sea, on top of
rocks, and reefs, in fact anywhere
they can get a hold for their roots
these being! more prolific than those
grown on higher land and ordinary
soil. Once , planted they require
little or no attention ; only to keep
boys and cuttle from them. The
great drawback to people of mode
rate means iB the time they take to
grow ; hut if tho land is to lio idle
all this time otherwise, the scale is
more than overbalanced, not to speak
of the handsome yearly income to he
derived, when they do come to
maturity. The diversified uses of
tho cocoanut are becoming daily more
aud more apparent.
Strangers who come to these Isl
ands are more than surprised at the
scarcity of the cocoanut. Smacking
their lips, on their journej' here, as
they imagine themselves drinking the
milk of the young cocoanuts, and
thinking of the stories they have
heard of the natives throning stones
at the monkeys up the palms, and
they in their turn throwing down
cocoanuts; Imt what doitheyvrealize?
That they can hardly get a cocoanut
for any amount of money.
Take a drio out to the Paik.
What do we sea? Little else but
prickly algaroba. What a vast dif
ference it would make with cocoanut
palms interspersed. What an end
less source of revenue to the Govern
ment, if a percentage of its waste
land were planted, with cocoanuts.
People connected with sugar planta
tions know how the cane near the sea
shore is stunted in its growth by the
sea spray. If cocoanut palms were
planted along the seaboard, they
would thrive, and consequently the
cane through their protection, the
palms attracting the right kind of
moisture in place of the salt spray.
Owners of laud at Pearl City and
the sea shores, now overrun with
algaroba, if they varied the scene a
little with cocoanut palms, would find
them, not only useful (in mote ways
than one), but ornamental, and when
they bring their friends from abroad,
to visit their country scat, they can
regale them in true tropical style.
The main question arises: Where
are we going to get these cocoanuts
to plant? The few that are on thce
islands require the use of a micro
scope to find them in the husk, and
are poor cobra-producing nuts. If
any of your readers are interested in
this matter, and will refer to me, al
their earliest opportunity, 1 will
solve the question.
