Thanks to the dear ladies the
Fourth of July was cclebiatcd at
llilo. Mr. A. B, Loebenstcin de
livered an oration which did him
much credit, and pleased the audi
ence which filled the Court House
Hall. Prof. Keep of Mills' College,
Cul., read the Declaration of Inde
pendence. It is said thai the De
claration was never read better in
llilo. Our American Consul, Mr.
C. Furneaux, presided. Prayer was
offered by Rev. E. P. Raker, the
singing was led by Mis. II. C. Aus
tin. The following favorite Ameri
can nils were sung: Star Spangled
Banner, Marching Through Gcoigia,
Rally Round the Flag, My Country
'tis of Thee. The llilo band (in
strumental) played for a short time,
showing marked improvement and
we feel proud of them.
After the exercises there was a
splendid lunch provided which was
greatly appreciated, and well patron
ized, nctting'SMO. Everything tast
ed so home-like, particularly Mrs. 15.
G. Hitchcock's baked beans. To
Mis. Lord, Mrs. Loebenstcin, Mrs.
J. R. Wilson, Miss Mary Hitchcock
wc owe man' thanks for the lunch.
Thero was a jackass race after
lunch, which caused great laughter.
There were eight jacks with riders
but no pri,c. Also a boat race, piue
S2., won by boat boys of sleamer
Hawaii. The ladies had nothing to
do with the races.
The pioeeeds of the lunch are lo
bu laid aside, with oilier money on
hand, lowaid a town hall, which we
hope tp iaye in time.
On evening of tlio Fourth there
was a ball which was well attended.
The hall was finely deeoiated. So the
day passed off very delightfully, the
weather being propitious.

The program was composed of
twelve selections, all good. The
conceit was given at Court House
hall and was exceedingly well attend
ed, and immensely enjoyed. We
certainly feel greatly indebted to the
club foi visiting llilo, and hope each
year we shall have as good a tieat
from the club.
We are glad to welcome from col
lege Ernest Lyman and II. C. Ila
pai, who have such fine voices. All
the young gentlemen sang well. The
glees sung were finely tendered and
were all encored. E.ich soloist was
also anchored and received a bou
quet. The lady soloist, Miss Louise F.
Dale, is truly an artist, and her sing
ing gaye everyone who can appie
ciate a good voice a superb treat.
She sings as though it gave her spe
cial pleasure to sing, same as it does
the sweet singing birds. She looks
like music personified, and knows
how to open her musical mouth in
order to let the sweot strains come
out, pure and delicious, as she wishes
them lo come. Her selections were
all encored. She replied by singing
"Annie Lauiie" and " Coniiu'
through the Rye," so well that the
encore was kept up for a long time,
a tremendous storm of hand-clapping.
Her selections gave this gifted
soprano an opportunity for display
ing her agreeable voice, which is
llexiblc and sympathetic and makes
us wish she resided in llilo so that
wc might hear her often. We pity
anyone who does not appreciate
music, for it assists in making a
heaven on earth. We must speak
in the highest piaise also of the lady
who played the accompaniments at
this concei t, Miss Mabel Wing. She
also is an artist. Wc had hoped she
would have favored us with a piano
solo.
On the evening of the 11th there
was a chinch sociable at the house of
Mr. 15. G. Hitchcock. It was extra
laigely attended.
Iter. Jiro. Okabe, Japanese mis
sionary at Hilo, retui nod to his charge
on 11 tli inst , and met with a very
warm reception. He had been five
months in Japan. He hi ought with
him Rev. Mr. Oku, who is a very
able man, highly spoken of by those
who knew him in Japan. The mis
sion is in a very piosperous condi
tion. The llilo Literaiy and Musical
took place on the Oth inst. There
wore lantern slides by Dr. Williams,
singing by Mrs. Thos. Gulick, piano
solo by Mrs. Forest, lecitations by
Miss Winter and Dr. Wiggins.
