MAUI JOTTINGS.
Trying Woather and Dull Times
Fay of Election Inspectors,
Tho wontlior continues dry, fino
and warm, and tho roads throughout
tho island aro torriblo dusty and dis
agreoablo to travel ovor, roat clouds
of dust riso at. owry turn of tho
wheol and stamp of tho hoof, and
unvolop tho ridor in their suffocating
embrace. Tho planters ao begin
ning to despair, and tho drought, if
continued much longer, will have a
very bad olVoel upon tho growing
crop. Under such circumstances il
is of course very hard to keep tho
toads in good repair, but still there
aro degrees oven in bad roads, and
t hero aro portions of tho road be
tween Spreckolsville and Kahului,
and round tho custom house corner
at tho latter place, which almost
defy description and ought to be at
tended, to immediately.
Sinco tho wholesale departuie last
wools of lady school teachers, school
children and other seekers of lost,
recreation and health, thing socially
have been rather quiet. There was
however, a very enjoyable and suc
cessful dance tho usual monthly
function at Spreckolsville, on the
evening of Saturday the .'Jul inst.,
and another select danco at "Dia
mond Palace" last Monday evening
the 5th inst.
Largo posters and notices an
nouncing tho arrival of tho Steon
Sinith combination have boon con
spicuous for tho last fow days and
caused a ripple of expectant cito
moiit ; tho dato and place ( f their
appearance has not yet boon an
nounced, but thoy may calculate
upon having good attendance hero
if their performances aro sullieicnthy
and timely published.
An accident occurred on tho now
ditch of tho Hawaiian Commercial
and Sugar Co. at Waiheo last even
ing, tho 9th inst., when a Chinaman
engaged in blasting rock had his
wrist shattered bj' tho premature
discharge of a stick of dynamite.
Dr. Herbert, who was speedily sum
moned, dressed tho wound and tho
patient is now comfortable.
Tho Electric Light Company of
Kahului is not such a phonomonal
success, iinancial or othorwiso, as its
promoters fondly hoped and expect
ed. There lias been a series of un
fortunate mishaps and breaks, and it
looks as if thero was a "hoodoo"
somewhere. As it is rumored that
several of tho stockholders own 13
shares, it is suggested for tho benefit
of tho directors that this bo differ
ently arranged; it may raise tho evil
spell! Meanwhile tho subscribers to
lights aro getting impationt, fur
nishing up their discarded coal-oil
lamps, and it would bo advisable for
tho company to got thoir establish
ment in propor working order be
fore tho public got too violently
prejudiced against it.
Political news is eagerly looked
for by every mail, and a sincere hope
that tho present deadlock may bo
soon at au end is entertained by
everybody. Tho Legislature ought
to continue its routine work and
finish its session, tho sooner the
bettor. By tho way, why could not
a bill have beon introduced early in
. the session for tho relief of tho many
Inspectors of Elections who aro still
patiently waiting for their pay?
Thoir position is at best an un
pleasant and thankless job, and thoy
. ought to have beon paid for thoir, in
most cases, very valuable time,
wasted on public business, long oro
this. Tho Minister has shown great
remissness in this matter.
Timos aro very dull and growing
worso every day; tho retail store
keepers complain bitterly of tho
hard times, lack of trade, and of tho
tardiness of tho Supremo Court in
rendering a decision in tho now
moro-than-a-yoar-old lire o'.ses at
Kahului, when Wildor's waroaousos,
containing a lot of merchandise bo
longing to many firms, wore burned
down. Thoro can bo little doubt
how tho cases will, or ought to bo,
docided, and tho long delay is a
manifest injustice to tho smaller
Chinese stores specialty, sovoral of
whom have gone to tho wall as a
direct consoquonco of being forced
to pay for goods thoy never received,
never realized a cent on, and an in
direct cause of loss to Honolulu
houses, who in thoir t urn have suf
fered by those failures.
Kahului, Sept. 10, 1892.
Take Good Care of the Children.
If you have children you will bo
interested in tho experience of Mr.
John Cook, of Pilot, Vermillion Co.,
111. Ho says: "Two years ago two
of my family, a young man and a
girl, had very sovoro and dangerous
attacks of bloody llux, Tho doctor
hero was unablo, after a week's time,
to chock or reliovo either case, I
threw the doctor overboard and be
gan using Ohamborlain's Colic, Cho
lera and Diarrhwa Uomedy. Im
provement was soon very soon and
my children arose jn a fow days
from what I foarod would bo their
deathbed. It is a grand, good medi
cine" For saloby all dealers. Bon
