The following choice bit of word paintini'
occurs in Hawthorne's Marble Kmm:
"Women bo they of what earthlv rank
thoy may, however gifted with intellect or
gonius, or endowed with awful beauty, havo
always some little handiwork ready to 1111
the tiny gap of every vacant moment. A
needle is familiar to tho lingers of them all.
A queen, no doubt, plies it on occasion ; thu
woman poet can use it as adroitlv as her
pen; tho woman's oyo, that has discovered
a new star, turns from its glory to send tho
polished little instrument gleaming along
the honi of her kerchief, ortodiirnu eusuiil
fray in her dress. And they havo greatly
tho advantage of us in this respect. Th'u
slender thread of silk or cotton keeps them
uuiiuu wiui i lie small, laminar, gentle in
terests of life, the continually operating in
fluences of which do so much forthu health
of tho character, and carry oil' wluit would
otherwise be a dangerous accumulation of
morbid sensibility. A vast deal of human
sympathy runs along this electric line,
stietching from tho throne to the wicker
chair of tho humblest bcamstress, and
keeping high ami low in a species of com
munion with their kindred beiims."

Notlco to tho Public.
Tho Honest People of Honolulu:
Tho Shirt Question is still in tho
minds of tho public and I wish to
mako a standing statement in rogard
to tho Luning-iTolinson matter. On
or about tho 2d day of December a
lot of old shirts was loft in my ofllco
with instructions to ropnir thorn by
ono signed Liming. 1 did ropnir
tho shirts, and n fow days later this
man Lulling, accompanied by his
wifo, called and brought another
shirt to bo ropnirod.'nnd also asking
to soo tho first lot of shirts. I show
ed them ond thoy wore both well
! pleased and said tho job was well
aono, ami told mo mat tno uninn
nian would call on Monday and take
them to bo re-laundried. This was
on Saturday previous to Aionony
mentioned, and when 1 finished tho
Inst shirt I brought tho bill to
Liming nt his ollice. Ho got excited
but I did not scare, and I simply
told hiin I would like to collect
money for my work. Ho used soino
very hot words and said I had a
chook to ask for my money then,
and ho said ho would nun mo, but
still I did not senro. I told Liming
in presonco of a witness that ho was
welcome to call at mj' place of busi
ness, where I havo a room enclosed,
and ho could try on the shirts thoro,
but ho would not do it. No doubt
Mr. Liming thought ho had dead
easy gamo, but ho was like tho man
that fell out of tho balloon ho was
simply not in it. I will say this,
that in any case I mako now shirts
and if thoy do not givo ontiro satis
faction I will alter thorn, mako now
shirts, or refund the money. Can
any person do more? I will also
keep m repair all shirts made by mo
for two years free of chargo, for I
am as quiet as a lamb.
