Work continues as usual on the
Monadnock. This will bo tlio next
entirely now ship to bo completed
on tho coast during tho present year.
Work on three of tho cutters be
longing to tho Monadnock has pro
gressed so rapidly that thoy are fast
nearing completion, and unless the
keels of tho remaining ones are laid
tho force in that branch of work will
be reduced. Tho boats being built
aro being so constructed as to enable
them to carry one of tho small riilo
guns which aro capable of doing
considerable damage at a great dis
tance off.

THE WORK OF STRIKERS.
Cologne, January 8. An attempt
was made this afternoon to blow up
tho Cologne express near Rauxol. A
dynamite bomb was placed on tho
track about 300 yards from tho sta
tion, but exploded prematurely. Tho
track was torn up for some twenty
yards and buildings wero nearly
shaken from their foundations. It
is believed that this explosion is tho
first gun in tho strike of coal minors
which is oxpecteil to oegin lioro early
this week.

City of Mexico, January 8. A
Nicaraguan despatch received in this
city says that Nicaragua insists that
Costa Rica should offer an apology
for recently allowing some of her
troops to cross tho frontier of tho
lornior republic. A despatch Iroin
Honduras saj-s that it is rumored
thero that Honduras and Salvador
will enter into an offensive and de
fensive alliance designed to prosorve
tho peace 111 Central America. A
correspondent writing from San
Joso, Costa Rica, says: "The Salva
dorean Government is inciting Nica
ragua against Costa Rica. It is
hoped here that war will bo averted.
Both governments, however, aro pro
paring for war.
SPARED A FRECIOUS DOCUMENT.
Washington. Jauuary 8. Last
night burglars entered tho County
Clerk's office at Fairfax Courthouse,
Va., and blow open tho safe, leaving
its contents, consisting of records,
strewn over tho lloor and partly
burned. Tho will of Georgo Wash
ington was in the safe, but the
depredators evidently wero not
aware of the fact, for the precious
document was found undisturbed
when tho Clerk went to tho ollico.

Chicago. Jan. 8. James J. Cor-
bott, the champion pugilist, said to
night that ho would tight Mitchell
next October, and that Hall had
told him recently that Mitchell

said that Goddard had no claim

The young men of Wailuku are
exceedingly busy getting up a niiu
istrol show, under the able director
ship of "genial friend Ned Bivens,"
as our rovered ''Zig-Zag'' loved to
call him. The boys are working
hard rehearsing and making pre
parations, and as a good many seats
Iiavo already been engaged for the
entertainment which is advertised to
como oir on the 27th inst., it will
probably bo a success, which is de
sorves to be, gotten up as it is for a
charitable purpose. Tho boys will
bo just too lovely for anything in
thoir "clawhainniers" and dude-
pants of tho most brilliant colors,

there is no telling!
A blase celestial, weary of this
valley of tears and unreasonably
limited opportunities for die fa anil
opium smoking, tried to leave said
valley for spheres unknown one day
last week, by swallowing a lump of
opium. He succeeded, despite Dr.
Herbort's most strenuous efforts to
keep him alive. The doctor is tho
busiest mau on tho island just now,
there being a great deal of sicklies,
especially malarial fever, among
people, Mr. F. S. Stolz of Knhului
being seriously ill. The weather is
simply superb, glorious, bright,
warm days and cold nights prevail
