that the Japanese warships Taka-
ehilio and Hi Yel. both of which
have been in Honolulu, engaged the
Chinese ironclad Chen Yueu. Thoy
were beaten off, but had damaged
tho Chinese ship considerably.
It is reported that Albert Wol),
formerly tu the Provisional uovern
mont forces, and a faruiltur charac
ter in police circles, has had his hoad
chopped ou in China. Ho Is said
to have joined tho Chinese army
and deserted it. Being caught bis
head had to go.
Mrs. Thirds' able and interesting
series of lectures will bo continued
on Friday at the usual time and
place. Subject: "Iteiucarnation." It
is expected that the audience will be
largo, as Mrs. Thirds has made her
reputation as a thinker, leader, and
opeakor, and tbis lecture will Ihj one
of the most interesting in tho series
to the thoughtful inquirer.
Dr. McLeuuan lait week received
ohotourapha of scenes in Cook's
Island, Uarotonga, where he is inter
ested iu a coffee plantation. There
is a splendid htroain and a lake,
bordered by luxuriant tropical
vegetation. Dr. MoLennan's part
ner has secured a lease of 100 acres
of grand coffee land in tho island
for fifty years at very reasonable
tonus.
The S. S. Belgio, Captain Walker,
arrived to-day about 1!) days from
Yokohama. The eauso of the delay
was head winds and rough weather.
Sho brought one thousaud tons of
Oriental merchandise, one of the
largest cargoes over imported here
from the Orient. The Belgiu did
not bring auy Chinese passengers

Hawaiian Islands to establish their
own form of government has been
formally acknowledged both by tho
executivo and legislative depart
ments of tho United States.
It seemed proper, therefore, so far
as I, tho Diplomatic Agent, had tho
right, to exteud recognition to the
Republic of Hawaii, it having been
created under tho forms of law and
existing without offoctivo opposition.
The action thus taken ha, 1 am
glad to state, been fully approved
by the proper authorities at Wash
ington. As the highest evidonce of
that fact I havo recoived an auto
irranh letter from tho Prosidout of
the United States addressed to you,
as tho Prosidont of this Ropublic.

Japanese Sources.
Thero has been considerable ex
citement and talk in local Chinese
and Japanese circles about tho pro
gress of tho war betweeu Chma and
Japau. Subjects of the two uations
were about town, chiefly near the
Post Ofilco, discussing tho merits
and demerits of tho conflicting par
ties. The Japaneso were iu aliappy
frame of mind. One of them receiv
ed a letter by the S. S. Helgic and
read it to a concourso of Japanese
near tho Post Office. He said that
his letter contained a report that
threo Chinese warships had been
sunk by the Japaneso and four ships
captured. The Japaneso defeated
the Chinose at sea and suffered lit t lo
loss ou laud. The Japan Govern
ment was ordering fresh warships,
and it had decided to battlo China
to tho bitter end.
Wing Mow Chan, one of the
larirost Chineso firms here, received
a letter by tho S. S. Bolgic from
Yokohama dated Aug. 11. Through
tho courtesy of Ho Foil, editor of
the Cliiueo Times, tho coutenls
woro interpreted to a Bulletin re
porter: A Japanese Admiral's ship
was sunk by the Chinese, and the
admiral, rear admiral and a good
many mon wore lost. Tho Japs had
captured the Chineso mail ship
Chow Kong. Four or five Japanese
warships were hemmed in by Chi
nese near somo sea port and were
blown up with torpedoes. Over
twenty Japanese ofilcets wero killed.
Ya Shan, iu Corea, was captured by
the Chineso aud over one thousand
Coroans were killed. Dynamite ex
plosives wero used by the Chinese.
The Japaneso defeated the Chinese
and over six hundred Chinese wore
killed. About five hundred Japa
nese were killed. So far over two
thousand Japauose havo Ik?cu killed
and about seven hundred Chinese.
Tho Japanese Government has is
sued an order iu Yokohama to Japa
neso noMspapers not to report much
about the war unless tho report was
favorable to Japan. Japan has suf
fered much loss.
Tho Japanese cruier Naniwa
Kan had not been sunk as report
ed in tho San Francisco papers.

A Chinaman Shot by tho Son of a
Doputy Sheriff.
Deputy Marshal Brown received
a message from the Hauula Court
house situate on tho Koolau, sido of
this island this forenoon, stating
that a Chinaman, hnd boon shot in
the legs. Frank I'ahia, the deputy
sheriff for the district of Koolau
polio aud Koolauloa advised that
medical assistance bo furnished the
Chinaman as he was seriously in
614 Fort Street.

last night, while ho was prowling
about tho Courthouse.
