Volcano Road Defended.
Editor Bcu-etin: .
To one convorsant with the fact
the statement made by your cor
respondent ''Hawaii" in yesterday's
issue seem to loave to inference a
Btate of things touching the Vol
cano road that calls for refutation.
Not that ho deliberately misstates.
Oh, nol hes too cleror for that.
But for some occult reaton he seems
to wish to cast a doubt on the effi
ciency of the road.
Having spent much of the time
this year in Olaa as a settler I ven
ture to affirm that no country road
on the Islauds has had heavier traf
fic than has this samo "glass-case
boulovard." Heavy froightcd teams
are constantly passing, loaded with
supplies and lumber up, with wood
and produco down, not once or
twice a month, but dally. The wear
and tear of this traffic for three
years over the most used part of the
road, i.e., Hilo to the 101b mile,
would seem a sufficient voucher of
the thoroughness of tho road build
ing, whon to-day the cycler finds
wboeling over it a pleasure or utu i
until recently traction engines and
huge vans began their deadly work.
Ono can Imagine tho hue and cry i
that would bo raised here were such (
machines allowed to run daily from
Kalihi to Walkikf, and to tne quiot I
Hiloite t moans much- tho same
thing, the now road being their one I
Sleasuro drivo. Truo it is narrow. I
ut with the conditions of climate
and soil and tho restrictions of tho
appropriations a widor road was not
practicable. For ordinary use it
proves wide enough at present.
As to the belt of forest left lining ,
the road, many of tho settlers are '
beginning to leol its beneut aa a
protection against the encroach
ment of Hilo-grass, foreign weeds
and other pests, while the alleged
damatre done tho road-bod by in
creased wetness (also alleged) ia nil.
as it is composed almost wholly of
broken rock and a-a whioh wears
and packs into a firm black sand.
And certainly the beauty of the
virgin forest, with glimpses of clear
ings here and there, enhance! the
pleasure of the ride a point the
commercial traveller, or "Hawaii"
perchance, fails to appreciate, alasl
And in author refutation of "Ha
waii's" inferonce allow mo to state
that no appropriation by tho gov
ernment has led to larger results
and tho opening out of tnoro lands
to the peoplo than has this same
"Volcano road" through Olaa.

Thoro is no modicino so often

ably adapted to the purposes for
which it is intended, as Chamber

passes but some member of tho
family has noed of it. A toothache
or headaoho may bo cured by it. A ,
touch of rhoumatisin or neuralgia is
