An Old Hunter Leada a Companion on a Fruitless Expedition. A party of hunters left town early last Sunday morning for Ewa In iiuust of game. Among the party was one of the oldest sportsmen in tlio country, whoso familiarity with the whole country side made him an oracle as well as guide to the party. Thu old Nimrod told bis comrades wonderful stories about the beauti ful scenes aud alluring aspect of a curtain "lake" situated "not very far olP from a point at which a pause was made for consultation. Whether tho story-teller meant it in .ill neriousness. or whether he pur po'cd to kindle enthusiasm in tbo crowd and thus secure their com pauy for a more extended explora tion than otherwise they would care to undertake, could uot then bo divined. One thing is certain, how ever, that the bait was takon by at least one hunter. A stalwart son of the Kadorlaud offered to accompany Nimrod to find the mysterious "lake." Those of tho party who were accustomed to the veteran's garrulous propensities simply kept quiet aud looked surprised, sur prised that such a wild story should receive ready credence from one generally kuowu to be a shrewd fel low. Not long after the party had como to a halt Nimrod aud his victim started olT. Long hours passed by and still the adventurers were ab sent. Tho rest of tho party "hugged" the tent, where refreshments wero iu abundance, only sallying out short distances when game made its presence evident. In consequence they looked as fresh as blooming roMs when the day's sport camo to an end. Towards I o'clock in the after noon the time for the party to make tho return trip -Nimrod and his companion returned, aud such a pair of wornout and dejected-look-iug chaps never well, hardly ovor presculud themselves to mortal eyes. One of tlio party said that he had read of the misery aud hardships experienced by Stanley and his fol lowers iu Africa, which, iu his opinion, surpassed anything that mau ever ouuured; but he thought that a careful comparison of the two cases showed that htauley's eiueut- . .. . .Z "i linn was now rivalled iu lue wuus oi 1 Oahu with the exception that Stitnluy (ottuil what liu went attor, wliilo ottr lituoos d'u'n't liud tbu "Inkf." Iu ordur that bouio tliiuifof thulr advunturo might bo divtilKt'd rufroshtnuntB wuro served out to thorn, and soon there came forth from thu victim tho whole hnrrowiut narrntivu of thuir search for thu "lake." Histoid tho tale la no liiKiilirious uiaunor that the franius of his nuditors fairly shook with linih'litor. Even Nimrod him eolf, who was HittTurlui mentally not to meutiou his bodily aches from thu curses of his victim, was constrained from the ltidicrousuess of his victim's story to joiu iu the laiih. A detailed account of the nxiioditiou would bo too lengthy for this article, but sutllcu it to say that hills . and vales wero traversed. mimosa Drusii uuneiraiou, auu streams forded; iu fact, all sorts of natural obstacles were surmouutod. Vol no "lake" materialized aud but little game was secured. Tho victim is now daugerous wheu "lake" is imtutiouod. N imrod is still impenitent, however, having already mooted another uxpoditiou. This is to a "macadamized road, all iu per iod preservation, mind you," ou the ridge of Kalihi mouutaius, which Gov. Domiuis or some other persou age bad built years ago with the aid of forty soldiers from thu House hold troops. Last Sunday's victim, it is safe to say, will not go with him to look for any "macadamized road" iu thu mountains. HONOR TO KNIOHTLY DAILXY. Rusidunts Will Qivo tho Popular Manager a Housing- Houbo.
