The daughter of a well-known
professor in Vienna has been for
some time past the terror of hor
friends and neighbors through the
occontricity of hor conduct. The
lady counts eighteen summers; she
has received a classical education,
and is indignant at tho fact that
female emancipation is not suQl
ciontly advanced in Austria to allow
of her attending tho University
lectures. She at last got over this
difficulty by donning malo attire, hor
deep contralto voice helping the
effect of this masquerade, binco
she has begun to go about in men's
clothes, tho youDg lady appears to
have assumed all the manners and
habits of a student, and takes a
special dolight in fencing She can
handle tho rapier as well as any old
student who has fought his ten
duels. Hor cousin, a top-form grammar-school
youth, was hor partner
and instructor. One day tho young
miss actually challenged him to fight
her with blank weapons, as sho
found tho simple practices wore get
ting too monotonous. The young
fellow had no objection to tho thing
itself, but to fight a girl that was
hardly to bo expected from one who
felt himself "evrey inch a man." But
his fair cousin managed somehow to
overcome his scruples. Blank weap
ons were soon procured, and a sur
geon's assistant engaged to bo in at
tendance. Tho duel actually took
place a few days ago. In tho second
rouud the young damsel receivod a
gash on her cheek, which had to bo
stitched up, and she now goes about
with a strip of pink court plaster on
her face as proud as any stage he
roine. IlVencr Tagrblatt,

will rejoice with Mr. J. A. Stutnm,

over his fortunate escape from a
siege of that distressing ailmont.
Mr. Stumm is foremau of Merriam's
confectionery establishment. Some
months ago, on leaviug tho heated
work room to run across the street
on an errand, hu was caught out in
the rain. Tho result was that when
ready to go home that night ho was
unable to walk, owing to inflamma
tory rheumatism. Ho was taken
homo, aud on arrival was placed in
front of a good fire and thoroughly
rubbed with Chamberlain's Pain
Balm. During the evening aud night
he was repeatedly bathed with this
liniment, and by morning was re
lieved of all rheumatic pains. Ho
now takes especial pleasure in prais
ing Chamberlain's Fniu Balm, aud
always keeps a bottle of it in tho
house. For sale by all dealers, Ben

Mr. John A. Scott, Manager of tho Hilo Sugar Company, gives tho follow
ing wonderful record of tho working of tho NATIONAL CANE SHKED
DEH, which was erected by their works nt tho commencement of tho crop
just harvested:
" During tho past week tho Hilo Sugar Company's mill exceeded any of
its former records by closing tho 125 hours grinding with au output of 3001
tons. Tliis is fully 10 percent more limn tho best work of former years.
" The three roller mill being 20 in. by 54 in. and the two roller mill 30 in.
by 00 in. 'Iho first mill doing this amount of woik in an efficient manner
and with great case, compared with work on wholo cane, owing to thorough
preparation of the cuno by tho National Cano Shredder, recently erected by
the Company.
"And by its uco tho extraction has been increased from 3 percent to 5 por
cent on till kinds of cane, und in eomo cases 80 percent has been reached;
tho average being 75 to 78 porcent, according to quality. '
"I continue to find tho megass from shredded cuno better fuel than from
wholo cane.
"Tho shredder has been working day and night for soven months and has
given mo entire satisfaction, having shredded during that timo about soventy
thousand tons of cane, and a largo part of it being hard ratoons.
"Tho shredder and endue require very little euro or attention."
