Manners of Smokers.
Smokers have nil sorts of peculiar
trick and oddities. One man had
the trick of constantly knocking off
tho ashes with his little fingor. He
would keep that little finger wag- ,
ging continually, and when thoro
wero no ashes he would burn his )
finger. But it was a habit which he
seemed wholly unable to overcome. .
Some men seem to find an inexpli-
cable (Might in making chimneys
of their nose, and soudiug the
smoke in volumes through those
orifices.
Another man had a singular trick
of shutting ono uyu to look along i
his cigar with tho other as he put it
into his mouth. The peculiar habits
of smokers will sometimes run i
through a wholo family.
"A man came to me in my office
one day," says a writer, "and repre
sented himsolf as a brother of an old
friend of mint. Ho was a shabby,
forlom-loolung specimen, and I was
not inclined to believe his story,
especially as there was no personal
resemblance to his brother.
"He told a plausible story, but I
was still inclined to disbelieve him,
and finally 1 told him to clear out,
and that 1 couldn't be bothered with
him.
'Then mj bettor feeling enmo to
tho front, aud I gave him a cigar.
He took it with a sad, forgiviug
smile, aud lit it. Ho hadn't taken
but ono puff before I na on my feet
begging his pardon.
"After taking that puff ho had
taken out his cigar with a peculiar
jerk, and blown tho smoke out of
' tho corner of his mouth iu a manner
which I had noticed and laughed at
over a hundred times when, with his
brother, I saw him do it. I knew
then that I was not being imposed
upou."
There is nothing gained by being
too bashful; and the inserter of the
1 subjoined advertisement crtaiuly
does not need to bo told so: "A poor
student requests some generous aud
noble-minded person to advance him
a sum of money to purchase a bi
cycle, with a view to reducing his em
bonpoint. Address, A. V., at the
office of this paper."

Mr. John A. Scott, Mnnagcr,of tho Hllo Sugar Company, gives tho follow
ing wonderful record of tho working of tho NATIONAL CANE SHRED
DER, which was erected by their works nt tho commencement of tho crop
just harvested:
" During tho jiaBt week tho Hilo Sugar Company's mill exceeded any of
its former records by closing tho 125 hours grinding with nn output of 300
tons. This is fully 10 percent more than the best work of former years.
"Tho three roller mill being 20 in. by 51 in. mid the two roller mill 30 In.
by GO in. '1 he first mill doing this amount of work in an efficient mannor
and with great ease, compared with work on wholo enno, owing to thorough
preparation of tho cane by tho National Cano Shredder, recently erected by
tho Company.
"And by its use tho extraction hos been increased from 3 percent to 5 per
cent on all kinds of cane, aud in some cases 80 percent has been reached;
the avcrago being 75 to 78 percent, according to quality.
" I continue to find Die megftss from shredded cunu better fuel than from
wholo cane.
"Tho shredder has been working day and night for uuven months and has
given me entire satisfaction, having shredded during that timo about soventy
thousand tons of cano, and a largo part of it being hard ratoons.
"Tho shredder and cngino require very littlo cure or attention."
