Tho Call pnya it would not be a laughing matter to tho Hawaiian Government if tho deposed Queen Bhould marry a Japanese Prince who could train tho .Mikado's eye on tho island-. A matter of importance which b. should have the attention of the legislature early in the Fcssion is the revision of the jury law. When the exibting ono was made there was a strong feeling against the government and the officials felt that it was impossible to get a con viction unless tho jurors had taken the oath to support the govern ment. We cannot believe that men ivho swear to render a verdict ac cording to tho evidence would bo any more honest because of being supporters of the government. Nor do Ave believe the number of acquit tals would bo increased by tho fact that the evidence was sifted by anen who had not been fit to take the required oath. The law reflects upon the probity of tho men who, under another form of government, wero considered eligible to decide tho guilt or innocenco of a man upon tho evidence presented. But aside from this tho present Inw inflicts a hardship upon the men who arc considered sufficiently .honest to serve as good men and true. Under the old order of things citizens who wero in a panel for two successive terms were excused for two years; now, wo understand some of these men have served for four terms with no signs of a vaca tion ahead of them. The percent age of convictions under tho pre sent law is not greater than under tho old ono, and wo fail to seo why it should bo if tho cases are de cided on tho evidence and the pro secution fails to introduce the re quired tcstimohy. Lct annexation come and men will adjust their affairs to suit con ditions," said a prominent military man this morning, "and if people cannot make a living here with an nexation let them go to the United States or Africa or some place where ljiey can." But what about sugar and rice? "Let it go; let everything go that cannot exist with Hawaii a part of tho United States. We must have stability, and we cannot .get it with this present govern ment." In other words wo are to let everything go so that we may sit under the banyan and hear tho flapping of tho wings of tho Amer ican eagle. Never mind our indus tries; let them droop; tho clatter of the machinist's hammer docs not furnish half tho music as tho Amer i can eaglo could in one single gqunwk. The policy of our military Jriend is on tho plan of tho survival of tho fittest, and tho men who have built up our industries and who, by their generosity, made tho city a beauty bpot are to go unless fltcy can stand advorsity. It's a Tory pretty theory to ponder over, 7ut in practice jufat now it is in jmtutii jh i.it .n tho conditions and then make anothor bid for an nexation. People- argue that with annexation thero would bo &ueh an influx of peoplo that our population would double in a short time. So 5t would, and a largo proportion of tho now arrivals would bo of a class thnt could not pay their personal taxes at tho end of tho year. This is not a farming country and our soil is suited only for certain pro ducts : let it be dovclopcd by thoso who are hero and tho country will be better ofr, a thousand times, even with a few years of a government that is not considered stable, than to kill our mainstay for the sake of becoming American citizens. Ha waii has never had to maintain a "poor house," but with annexation at this time it would be one of tho items for consideration in the ap propriation bill. The Latest Silver Cru.c. It has come to pass that a collec tion of silver all in the shape of tpoons is no longer thought as in teresting as a collection of silver made up of many quaint and curi ous things having different shapes and uses or no use at all. The curio bilvcr table of latest fashion has sometimes a silver lamp of exquisite shape, picture frames of silver, bonbon boxes, odd spoons, a piece of embroidery heavy with gold and silver threads, filigree sil ver from Venico and pretty things made from silver in all parts of the world. Such is a collection that is not easily called together, and its owner values it accordingly.
