The ship lllg Hontuiza which lea Baltimore
for San Francisco on March 23d, returned to
Hampton Hoatls, having been partially des
masted In a hurricane. Tho vessel lost bow
sprit and Jlhhoom, entire foremast from truck
to keelson, inalntopgallant-mast and mlzzcn-topgallant-mast,
with yards and sails attached
to all tho spars and the monkey galf.
Tho fine ship Salsette, a vessel which n con
plo of years ngo occupied a loading berth In
Port Jackson, was totally destroyed by fire In
mid-ocean on April 18. The ship at the time
wns bound from Melbourne, with a general
cargo tor London. Fortunately, the Aberdeen
clipper ship Mlltlades, Captain Ayllug, was In
tho vicinity, and sho arrived on the scene In
tlmo to witness the climax; and render much
needed assistance to the crew. The Mlltlades
rescued tlic whoio of tho ship's company, some
SO all told, and on May 7 landed them safely
at Capetown, icsuming her voyage on Ma 8
for Port l'lrie.

twenty-four hours absence. As soon as tho

fodnd that Capt. Garland had none off yester
day without his papcrs.Tholatter wore lying on
the desk of the American Consul at whoso of
fice Captain Garland was to call for them. lie
did not do so, however, and the papers laid
there awaiting him until Consul Mills took
them off to the vessel this morning. Captain
Garland's explanation Is that In tho excite
ment Incident to the religious exercises held
just pluvious to starting and tho trouble caus
ed by getting two fractious donkeys on board
at tho last minute ho forgot to go up town
for his papers. The lemonade la on the Cap
tain when he returns to this port.
