The Clnoniclo of tho 21st has i
nn iuterviow with W. F. Curtis of
tho Chicago llocord, who had
jtiBt arrived from tho Orient on
the stoamor Gaolio. Mr. Cur it
made a study of tho cholera cpi-
domio during his stay in China
and Japan during his visit. Ho
said:
"Oliineso arc dying by tho
thousands. I passed through tho
streets of Poking, Shanghai and
Tientsin and saw cholora victims
dead and dying on every hard.
It is no uncommon sight to see
tho (load bodies of cholera victims
lying on tho street in one block,
and in the noxt a lot of Chim-so
gorging themsolvca with raw cn
cumbors and tnoloi.s. The cho
lera is all attributable to the filthy
habits of the Chinoso and the
weather. Tho sumnii-r w.s quite
cool until August. Thou a spell
of excessively hot weather c.imo
on. and with it the cholera
"Jn Peking they hove n plan of
issuing permits for tho removal of
bodies outsulo tho city walls. As
is probably well known, nobodies
u ro intorred within tho walls. To
secure permission for tho removal
of tlie remains of a deceased mor
tal ontsido tho walls of tho city
a evil is dropped in a box. A
cash is a small brass coin worth
one twentioth of 1 cent. At night
fall the cash rccoptaclo is full. It
contains from 20U0 to 3000 pieces
of coin, and when it is considered
thut nearly all of these cases re
sult from cholora, the onorruotis
oxtont of the disease can rcudily
bo judged. The disease is us had
at Shanghai and Tieu-tsin, and is
also mowing down Chiueso by tho
hundiod in othor parts of tho in
fected country."
Mr. Curtis said that tho cholora
is confined almost exclusively to
the nativo Chi'icsc. In Poking,
whoro very low foreigners reside,
ho had heard of no deaths among
the whito population. In Tien
tsin only ono death among tho
foreign population had boon re
ported nn to tho hour he left
China. Tho victim was an Eng
lishman, who filled tho position
of first mate onboard a Chinese
ship. In Shanghai, where the
cholera is raging at an awful rato,
tho totalities among the foreignors
have boon much greater. Mr.
Curtis said ho had been advised
of oighteen deaths.
Tho Oriental papers brought
by the Gaolio to San Francisco
contained little news- regarding
the cholera epidemic. Tho last
weekly roport, dated Soptomber
lth, showed (501) eases in Japan,
and -l-l-l deaths for tho preceding
seven days. Sinco tho ontbiouk
of tho scourge thero have been in
Japan !J7..').)0 cases and '2-1 871)
deaths. Two cases occur.id in
Yi'kohama on tho !ld inut., and
tho day before there wore three
cases.
Cholera in Tokio not only shows
no signs ot abatemont, but is
steadily on tho increase. During
tho twenty-four hours ending at
noon on the .'id inst. fifty-nine
fiesh cases wiro reported there.
There aro signs of further
sproad of cholora in Seudal, and
tho summer vacations of various
schools thero havo boon prolonged
in consequenco.
The Italian cruiser IJmbria
arrived at Hakodate on Friday,
September (HI). Two caos of
cholera havo agaiu been, ropoited
in the ship.
