In nn interview of tho Now Zea
land llornld with Admiral Bridgo,
commanding tho South Pacific
Squadron, the following passages
"With tho realisation of tho iui
portanco of tho navy, thcrojs too

"Thoro is. Tho first ohjoct un
doubtedly has boon to rentier it
practically impossible for any
probablo combination of onnmips
to dismomber theEmpiro by forci
ble occupation of any portion of
it. In tny opinion our naval pow
er has alrcaily reached a tago of
oilicioncy and number which en
sures that the first object lias beeu
Sained. The noxt object is un
oubtt'dly to render reasonably
securo our ocean trade. Virtually
tho ocean trade of tho British Em
pire is about 70 per cent, of tho
vrholo world. The immense- im
portance of this proportion is not
fully realised even by oursolves.
But there nro symptoms that this
much, at all events is realised
that wo should bo in a position to
secure our groat share of tho trndo
of the world against nil risks that
can bo foreseen. The most recent
increase of tho navy is no doubt
largely due to a desiro to ensure
tho security of our trade It is
important that these two objects
should always bo borno in mind,
becauso it shows that tho poworful
British Navy is iu no sonso an ng
"You look upon it thon as de
fensive only ? "
"it is as puroly defensive in its
way as tho butteries and fortifica
tions tliat are orocted upon tho
frontiers of independent States.
Tho most recent naval programme
has been lately stated by the First
.Lord of tho Admiralty, to have
-been formally drawn up as far
buck as November l'Jbo. 1 can
answer for it, from personal
knowledge, though not formally
put on paper, it was virtually de
cided upon fully two years ago.
This will mako it quite evident
that no hostility to any particular
nation, or nations, was intended
by tho largo iucreaBo to tho lleot
lately sanctioned by Parliament.
It was simply tho continuation of
a policy, essentially defensive,
adopted at least seven years ago."

Gcittlcmci : I have taken only two bottles
of Paine' s Celery Compound for rheumatism,
and liver and stomach troubles, and will be
frank in saying that I am well pleased with the
results. I used one bottle and was so much
better that I abandoned its use for a
time, but my old stomach trouble made its ap
pearance again. I procured -another bottle in
September and after using that I felt well.
