VKKY NEW WOMAN.

Wenr n J'ollcemnn'M itlnr.
Tho Oakland correspondent o
tho San Franoisco Examiner sup
plies his papor with thd follow
ing: Miss Frnnlsio Lane, Oakland's
up-to-dato Portia, has inado hor
appoarance in a now rolo. She
wants to wear a star and he en
dowed with .the powers of a police
man. Tho young lady is an ap
plicant for tho position of Olerk
of tho Chief of Police. Hor
frionds are hard at work to secure
tho position for hor, but tlni far
they have mot with inu.'li ( x i
tion. Miss Lane, however, i-j not
to bo oido-traokc d on any mu-h
issue. Sho believes that sho is
compotent to fill tho position and
sho is urging hor iidolity to the
Populist party as a reason for her
appointment.
Ulmrlos E. Gardiner, aPopulist,
is at present acting as clerk.
Mayor Davio has domando.d his
removal on tho ground that ho
signed names to registrations
without authority. Tho Mayor
assorts that if tho Police Commis
sioners do not romovo Gardiner
ho will do so. Tho clerk is vested
with police powers and ho wears a
Btar, Lmt not a uniform. If Miss
Lano should succeed him she, too,
will bo called upon to wear a star
and occasionally do police duty.
Tho young lady says dho feels
perfectly compotout to fill tho
position in every particular. Miss
Lane's contest for tho placo has
caused a great deal of discussion
among tho Populist politicians,
because she stands high in tho
councils of the party and will tnko
tho stump during the campaign.
If sho fails in her attempt, to so
cure tho placo sho may run for
Congress in this district, for she
now has that proposition under
consideration.
Baron Uarateau has been retain
ed by Miss Lano as hor manager.
Ho is making a vigorous contest
to got her into the Police Depart
ment and seems to think that she
. will win.
"I am putting spurs to every
Populist politician in this town
on bohalf of Miss Lane," said
Baron Barateau today. "I just
had a talk with Burclotte Cornell,
tho Populist orator, ond tried to
got him in lino, but he objected
and said tho Police Department is
no place for a woman. I claim
Miss Lano can fill the position of
Olerk of tho Ohiof of Police ns
well as any man. Sho tolls mo
that Bho is anxious to got the
place, and she ought to havo it
because sho has done much for
tho party. Sho tolls mo that sho
would not have tho least objection
to wearing a star, but of courso
she draws tho lino at a polico
mail's uniform. Miss Lane is in
this fight to stay. If sho does not
get the placo sho may run for
Congress from this district. Sho
is now considering that matter.
No matter what happens, sho is
going to stump the country for
the Populists during tho cam
paign. Sho is a lawyer and sho
could interpret tho law for Chief
Lloyd and keep him out of
trouble."
