HOW TO DRINK WATER.
Dleeiutci Caused by the Too Sparing Vae
of Fluid.
Physicians any that too littlo flnld is
tnkcn, rnthcr than too much, aud tho
groat benefit derived from treatment at
mineral springs is often qnito as much
duo to tho amount as to tho kind of
"wotcr.
Many diseases aro directly duo to too
great concentration of tho fluids of tho
body and aro to bo counteracted by tho
Imbibition of larger quantities, for a
timo at least To havo sufficient water
present is tho rationalo of water cures,
especially that form whioh prescribes
tho drinking of a onpful of hot or cold
water half an hour beforo meals. This
not only washes out tho stomach; it
furnishes tho medium for tho aotivo se
cretions, ptyalin, Oastrio juice, etc,, in
quantity. On tho othcrli.it.il, rxcf sk lies
in tho patli of this as well us otlu i
things, and what is a ruloforouo is not
a rulo for another. Howover, if ono
finds that tho taking of n pint of water
will roliovo thatsenso of oppression and
indigestion which sometimes occurs nu
hour or two after a meal, and that only
fiworablo effects follow, tho inferenco is
that too littlo was taken witli tho food.
Tliero is not much danger of taking too
much clear water.
Tho tempcraturo of tho water to bo
drunk is often n vexed question. This
may bo left to tho individual, for tho
quuutity taken (ouo-half to ono pint) at
any ono timo can havo but littlo influ
ence upon tho tempcraturo of tho 14
pints of blood circulating rapidly about
tho 70 or tnoro pounds of water in tho
tissues, which aro maintained at a tem
pcraturo of nearly 100 degrees.
For cxporimcut two tumblers of ico
water havo been slowly swallowed and
promptly siphoned out and found to
havo uttaiued a tempcraturo of 05 de
grees in flvo minutes. It is truo that it
is possiblo to swallow ico water so rap
idly and in such quantities that tho
stomach receives a momentary chill and
tlisturbauco sets in, but this is no reason
why all ico water should bo forbidden.
How Cloth I Made Waterproof.
Tho process now in uso among tho
Yorkshiro clothmakcrs for waterproof
ing cloth is ono that may bo under
taken by private persons in their own
homes and is ns follows: Dissolvo ono
ounco of isinglass in ono pound of soft
water, ono ounco of alum in two pounds
of water and a quarter of an ounco of
soap in ono pound of water, all sepa
rately. Strain tho solutions, mix them
and let them simmer for Eomo timo.
Brush tho preparation whilo hot over
tho cloth, and when dry brush it well
and lay on another coat, all on tho
wrong side. Tho cloth will bo fit for uso
in two or thrco days.
How to Make n Stnlneil Glass Window.
If tho artistio and thrifty housewifo
will s.ivo tho colored glass bottles that
find their way into her houso and put
them to uso in tho following manner,
sho will havo something that will bo a
delight Break tho bottles into compar
ativcly small pieces, and then, if a cer
tain regularity is desired, cut tho pieces
into shapo with a diamond pointed glass
cutter.
Arrange- theso on n pauo of plain
whito glass tho desired size, using a lit
tlo transparent cement to hold them in
placo, and a mixturo of whito cement
and putty to imitato tho lead that is
used in expensivo stained glasswork.
Tho dull, rich olivo of tho claret bottle,
tho deep amber of tho sherry, tho deli
cious sea water green which is used for
ginger ale, and tho various shades of red
nud bluo that ono gets from tho apothe
cary and tho wiuo merchant aro revela
tions when cleansed of their contents
and hold in singlo thickness against tho
light
When tho cement is dry, tho window
can bo put in place, and us tho sunlight
strikes it sho whoso Angers havo do-no
tho work will feel that it wa3 well
worth tho trouble
