An cxclwnpo (oils cf u nu tlmtl report
ed to by Imliiui luotht ia to keep babies
from crying. At tho first attempt to cry
on tho part of tho infant the mother
places her hand over lta mouth nnd
pinches Its no30 so that it cannot breathe.
Naturally it atops crying, nnd in an in
stant it is nllowcd to brcatho freely
again. This operation, repeated persist
ently whenever tho baby begins n cry
ing spell, soon persuades tho child that
it is its own net tho effort to cry
which produces tho uncomfortablo chok
ing fit. It soon decides that tho gamo is
not worth tho candlo and stops its wails.
Now, it is too much to expect tho
American mother will resort to this
hcroip incasuro to persundo her infant
that crying is unnecessary, but will eho
perhaps seo tho moral in tho proceeding?
Ilcrbort Spencer joints tho bkuio in his
essay on education, when ho ndviscs
parents to follow tho methods of naturo
in their correction of their children. A
child touches a hot stove, nnd his linger
is burned. Ho docs it again, and ngniu
his finger is burned. Every tinio ho tries
it tho punishment is ready. Probably
tho second attempt cures him, nnd never
again whilo ho lives docs ho voluntarily
'try tho temperature of a picco of healed
iron on his exposed skin. It is not tho
violent spasmodic punishment that
means correction of n child's faults.
Retribution may bo small and compara
tively insignificant if it is absolutely
euro to follow transgression. It is tho
persistent, relentless and not to bo es
caped from character of tho couscquenccs
of his misdemeanor tliat impresses tho
childish mind and finally convinces him.
All of whioh is with apologies to Mr.
Spencer, who has said it infinitely hotter
in his essay, to which nil mothers who
hnvo not read it aro earnestly referred
by a writer in tho Now York Times.
Treatment of Oilcloth.
A correspondent of tho New York Sun
confides tho secret of cleaning nn oil
cloth nnd making it last n very long
timo: Cut into pieces hnlf an ounce of
beeswax, put in a saucer, cover entirely
with tnrpentino, and placo in tho oven
until melted. After washing tho oil
cloth thoroughly with a flannel, rub tho
wholo surface lightly with n bit of flan
nel dipped in tho molted wnx nnd tnr
pentino. Then rub with a dry cloth. A
polish is produced, and tho surfaco is
lightly coated with tho wax. When tho
floor requires to bo cleaned, tho wajr is
washed off, together with tho dust or
dirt that may havo gathered, whilo tho
oilcloth is preserved.
Hemovlnc Old Wnll 1'nper.
During tho houso renovating, if an old
wall paper is to bo removed, boforo (o
ing to work closo tho doors and windows
tightly, placo nn old boiler or tub in tho
room nnd 1111 it with boiling water.
Tho steam will moisten tho paper, nnd
tho work may bo douo quicker nnd more
