is now affecting tho market prico
of tho refined article Tho de
struction of the sugar cano plan
tations in (Jubti on account of tho
rebellion in progress thoro mado
many people believo tho world's
supply would fall off greatly and
give sugar a vory high prico. This
was the goneral opinion in Eu
rope, and, togothor with tho
bounties offered in some parts of
Europo for tho production of beet
sugar, it resulted in n yield uu
precodentedly largo and more
thnn enough to make up tho
Cubau doficit. Under tho present
taritr laws of tho country this
European sugar is now coining
iuto this country at prices which
force us to make a reduction.
"There is a second factor which
has also influenced our action of
today in cutting tho prico of sugar
half a cent on tho pound. Hong
kong shipments of sugar are com
ing liere to nn extent that makos
thoir competition felt. Tho Houg
kony aitiolo is mado from sugar
cano by tlio vory cheap labor of
Chinese. Just enough of it is
coming hero to disturb the market."
Mr. Uxtuird did not think the
prico of bugar would decline much
from tlio present figured.
Inquiry of Honolulu sugar men
elicits tho fact that the fall in
prico had not extended to raw
sugars up to tho sailing of the
Peru.

Arctic and his great achieve
ments are still tho wonder of tho
scientific world. Nansen's theory
of tho movement of tho ico pack
and tlio experience of tho Pram
have been a revelation to the
Arctic oxperts. When the ex
pedition started out it wns con
sidered a foolhardy venture, but
it now scorns Nausen was right.
Among the many things found to
confirm his theory of tho move
ment toward tho polo was a
wooden box, which was picked up
nour the farthest point reuched.
This box was opened and to tho
delight of tho entire expedition
was found to contain two dozen
bottles of Rainier Beer. It was
found to be cool, sparkling nnd
refreshing. It is likely Nausen's
testimonial to tho superior quali
ties and tasto of Rainier Reer
