HOW TO CARE FOR BEDS.
Th Washing of Blanket and Dotting of
MBttmaM.
Mattresses, blankets, pillows and
other articles of bedding require much
oaro to bo kept 'odorless nnd clean. ''
The main enemies to mattresses Jsro
dust, damp and moth, and frequent
brushing must bo given thorn, for in an
incredibly short time they will harbor
dust all along the edges and where tho
button is fixed. A loose cotton cover
over the mattress, made to button neatly
at ouo end, also goes n long way toward
keeping it clean. This can bo washed
and changed ns often as need bo with
out much tronblo or expense. It is very
important to air nil tho bedding thor
oughly. Every nrtlclo should bo dnily
taken off and laid separately over a
chair, and a strong current of air should
bo allowed to circulate through tho
room before tho clothes ore replaced.
Tho mattress should bo turned daily
and from end to end, as this insures it
being worn moro evenly and not sink
ing in tho middle.
Blankets nro a difficulty to many peo
ple, mostly becauso thoy cannot make
up thoir minds as to how often they
should be washed. In many houses they
are only washed onco a year; but some
how that does seem rather too raro a
proceeding. On the other hand, it is
really not necessary to have them washed
moro than twico a year; but they must
havo proper care in tho interval in tho
shapo of airing, shaking, eta A wash
ing mochino is Tory good for the pur
pose, especially as they Bhould never be
rubbed by tho hand. Tho water should
be only lukewarm, and 'a little soap
well lathered in tho water is all'' that
will be required. Wring the blankets'
very dry through a wringer, ahakthent
out,i and wash again in the 'same) way,1
wringing each time, until they are' qui to
clean. Do not rinse them, but pull them'
into shapo and hang them out in the
sun, which is a great help to preserving
a good color.
now tho Xttr "1" Game to Bo Dotted.
The letter "i" has not always been
dotted, for Dissraeli, in detecting 'a lit-1
entry forgery, says, "BcsUos'that there'
wcrodots on tho letter '1,' a custom not
practiced until tho eleventh (century. "
At this timo, however, tho dot over the
letter "i' took the form of an accent
and was only used when tho "i" was
doubled or in juxtaposition with "u. "
In tho twelfth century tho accent was oc
casionally added when '" was com-i
blned with other letters, but it only- be
came universal when the invention of I
printing made it convenient -to retain
both forms. In the -fourteenth century!
tho accont begins to change into a dot,
the earliest occurrence of "i" being in
manuscript dated 1327.
Uncertainties and a Certainty.
The attention of the public is
now fully occupied and diverted!
in the consideration and discus
sion of several important current
and prospective happenings. An
nexation, as yet unsecuro, Re
ciprocity threatened; the coming
of the Naniwa, and her mission
after arrival; the outcome of the
war between Greece and Turkey
and, whether or no, all Europe
will evontually become involved;
tho settlement of tho quarantine
squabblo aro all themes of much
conjecture and uncertainty, and
while opinions aro freely offered,
none can accurately foretell tho
outcomo of any of these matters.
Nevertheless, it is becoming more
apparent, as each day passes, thut
Buffalo and Hoffbrau aro the
favorite lirewH, and it if) gratify
ing that assurance is given that
regular shipments of these whole
some and strengthening bever
ages can bo depended upon, and
that thay will, as heretofore, be
dispensed at tho Boyal, Pacific
and Cosmopolitan Saloons, and
that the interchangeable oheck
system is an established fact.

portrait enlargement wo invite
your attention to tho superior
work wo offer and would ask a
comparison of prices and work
manship before placing your
