"No, sir to their industry

that many of tbeso planters have

opposed to tho abrogation of tho
treaty.
Chairman Smith thought that
the resolution' should bo placed

tho Hawaiian plnntors refused to
renew their contract with tho
sugar trust for fivo years, aud tho
trust, to got sugar, came here and
purchased tho beet sngnr factories
in this State. Now tho trust fears
that refiueries will bo erected in
San Francisco for tho purpose of
refining Hawaiian sugar, and if it
can got a largo duty imposed on
this sugar it will prevent competi
tion. Mayor Pliolau had drafted a
communication to Congtoss aud it
was adopted. It is as follows:
The sentiment of the people of
this city, expressed by petition,
representing the commercial and
financial interests' more particu
larly, favorB the treaty relations
now existing between the United
States and Hawaii, and believing
that such is the prevailing senti
ment and that the abrogation of
the reciprocity trpaty would bo
not only injurious to the city of
San Francisco, but would serious
ly imperil Atnoricnn interests in
the Pacificwe petition your honor
able body uot to abrogate tho
troaty, but to recognize and ratify
its teriuB in the proponed tariff
law.
This communication will be

the board will then decide whether
it should bo sent on to Congress.
Mr. Craig presented a copy of
the petition for the continuation
of reciprocity to which pages of
signatures of San Francisco mer
chants were attached.
