Starting shortly aftor 12 m.
yesterday, Deputy Marshal Obil
liugworth, assisted by Bicyclo
Patrolman Fnnouf, niado a cotn-
ploto senrch of Yeo AVo's butcher
shop on King streot. Tho work
was not completed until after four
o'clock hut when it wan, '12 tins of
Hongkong opium and ovor 050
other tins, supposed to contain at
least a little opium each, wero
takon from a position uuder the
kitchon floor whero tho slime is
ovor a man's head and worms and
centipedes u lucrouiblo si.c,
llourish. Tlio whole lloor of tho
kitchen was torn up.
AlthoiiL'li tho police had boon
working about throo hours, peoplo
on tlio outside luiu not be
come aware of what was
going on. Tuoy did not
find out until after U o'clock that a
lirgo amount of opium had been
fouud. "When they did, tho
street nenr hy becarao packed.
Yeo Wo, the proprietor of tho
shop, was put under arrest and
released later on 8500 bond.
Mr. Chillingworth tells of a
clever little-dorico on tho part of
the mon who run tho opium busi
ness in Yeo Wo's shop. This is
in tlio simps of a lino built out of
heavy woul and lined with metal
iueido. The top opening is in tho
opium smoking room ahovo whilo
the lower opening tho police aro
very much puzzled about.
This arrnugoment is used to
empty opium, pipes, lamps, etc.,
into when tho polico make a raid.
It was always supposed by tho
ofliccrs that the paraphernnlia
thrown down, went directly into
tho slimo but this proved yester
dny to bo erroneous. A ctowbnr
attached to a ropo wns lot dowu.
Tho oHieors wore surprised to find
it keep on going through the slimo
and ton feet below whore it struck
hard bottom. Ou drnwing it up
ngain they found tho crowbar was
perfectly dry.
Tho police cannot fathom tho
mystory. That there is an under
ground passage somowhoro is be
yond doubt.
