MISSIONS IN INDIA
Wednesday evening was de
voted to a "Missionary Oon
oert" at tho Central Union
Chapel and the ovent of tho occa
sion was an addrosa upon the
"American MiseionB in India" by
ltev. H. J, Bruce who has been in
Honolulu for a few weeks and
who will leave for tho States by
tho Gaelic. Mr. Bruco is an easy,
pleasant Bpoaker, brimful of mis
sion statistics and a fand of wiord
stories of tho persecutions ho aud
uis fellow-workers met with in
the land of tho Brahmins.
Mr. Bruco stated that tho Am
erican Mission was started in In
dia iul813 aud that he was sont
there iu 1803 and thoreforo pass
ed 3G years in that country. Tho
Mission is uudor tho direction of
the American Board and its ruin
istrnliou8 have bocn mainly' in the
Bombay district, an area of 17,000
square miles with a population of
about l.OOO.OOU Tho earlior of
forfs of tho missionaries and tholr
triuls woro Bi'mply a ropotition of
the history of. all missions, with
tho exception that ho could not
think of any system productivo of
so much hindranco us tho caste
belief of the Brahmins. For cun
uinc, vindictivo methods of porso
cution anainst both toacher and
convort tho Brahmins were en
titled to tho palm, Ho gave in
stances of schools long establish
ed and converts of years Going
brokon up and driven away in a
duy by tho leaders of ono or the
othor of tho castes and without
any porcoptiblo acts. It was sim
ply an order issued and tho dam
ago was dono.
Tho famine of 1897 was dwelt
upon at loncth and tho .speakor
stated that after it tho number of
converts in his district was doubl
ed, bat tho coros increased by tho
addition of thousands of orphans
and plaguo waifs for whom no
provision could bo made. During
thopaBttwo years tho-AruoriottU
Board had reduced iLtbo working
staff ono-half aud this will in his
opinion have tho effect of undoing
much of tho good of years. The
total number of baptized converts
in tho American district at the
present timo is G579 and Mr.
Bruco thinks it is safo to say that
thoy aro so far removed from
Brahminical influences as to be
considered safely in tho fold of
Christianity.
Tbo mooting was concluded by
Mr. Kincaid in tho presentation
of tho annual roports of tho
uuurcn.

There was another largo crowd
of tonnis enthusiasts at tho PaoiGo
Tenuis Club courts yesterday
aftornooa to witness tho contests
in mixed doubles. Miss Hoffman
nnd O H V Norton succeodod in
winning from Miss Hart and
Charles Elston. There was mnch
speculation as to this match as tho
teams woro pretty well matched.
Miss Hart has for a long time
been considered tho best lady
playor in Honolulu but oho has
certainly mot her match in Miss
Hoffman who plays an extromoly
strong game. Tho score was 6-1
and 0-3.
In tbo match between Mrs.Guun
and D. Howard Hitohcock against
Miss Dillingham nnd Geo. Fuller
it was considered a foroaono con
elusion that tho former team would
win. They did cairyoff tho first
sot, 6-2, but tho younger playors
took a braco at this stago of tho
gamo and won tho last two sots,
G 1, G 4.
This aftornoon at 4:15 o'clock
Miss Hoffman nnd O H W Norton
will bo pitted ngninst Mies Dil
lingham and Goorgo Fuller for
tho championship in mixed
doubles.
