Tho absence of Stirling war news and
tho rebaballtatlun in the estimates of
tho public of Ocncial White, who, since
his leverso at Nicholson "a Nek, cer
tainly appears to havo used bis cen
tial position to successfully strike at
different points of the clrclo of invest
ment, thua restoring confidence In his
ability to bold tho Boers in check,
have permitted public attention to mo

confidently predicted in somo quarters.
Soi'ttcK by the British.
London, Nov. 7. Tonight's welcome
dlspntebcs from tho front have rent
tho ell of gloom enveloping Lady
smlth, showing tho British, garrison
not merely standing on tho dogged dc
fensho, but executing a Berlcs of bril
liant sorties. Accounts from differ
ent sources ngreo that, tho laconic olll
clal description of Thursday's engage
ment as "an effectlvo shelling of the
Boer laager" was unduly modest. It
appears that General Sir George Stcw
nrt White sent a strong force of cav
alry and infantry to attack tho Boets
at Tatham's farm, about ten miles to
tho northwest, near Hester's, and ap
parently nchloted a surpilse, tho Boers
being caught on tho open veldt and cut
to pieces, and their camp captured.
Encouraged by this success, General
Whlto decided to risk nn tnen more
Important engagement on tho following
day, which wac again justified by suc
cess. Ladysmlth had been isolated and u
Boer forco had intercepted the rail
way between Inilysmlth nnd Colonso.
This forco on Friday had descended up
on Colenso, nnd ns shown by the dls
patches fiom Estcourt hnd compelled
u hurried abandonment of Colenso,
nnd a retirement of the British to Est
court. General White had ascertained
that tho Boers were attacking Colenso
but ho was not fiwnro of tho British
rclnfoi cement. He had determined,
therefore, to attack tho Boers In the
rear, thus hoping to achlcvo tho double
object of drawing off nn attempt upon
tho weak garrison of Colenso nnd pos
sibly of reopening communication
southward.
Tho Boors had advanced southward
until they lrad occupied the hills north
of Tugela river and dominating Colen
feo on tho other sldo of tho stream. Tho
hills slopo to a plain that reaches to
tho banks of the Tugela.
General Whlto's division caught tho
Boers in tho rear and after tho hills
had been shelled tho British Infantry
stormed tho position. Meanwhile- the
British cavalry swept round tho hills,
and ns tho retreating enomy descended
into tho plains with British bayonets
bchlnd.and tho river in front of them,
they wcro charged by tho cavalry nnd
seem to havo perished almost to n
man. Tho British then returned to
Ladysmlth without coming into touch
with tho Colenso garrison, which had
retired to Estcourt.
