KOSTETTE
San Francisco, Juno 23. Beginning
with the Inauguration of the Ocsaul:
Steamship Company's new steamship
senile between San Francisco, Hawaii
nnd Austinlasla, or possibly at an inr
llcr date, a close tralllc arrangement
between that company nnd the Santa
Fe wilt go Into effect, according to n
story that Is receding considerable
credence In railroad circles. 11 Is laid
that the traffic arrnngement will make
the Australian line the exclusive ocean
connection of the Santa Fc, thai joint
ngcnclcs will bo established nt Hono
lulu and other potts reached unl) by
the Oceanic steamers, and that freight
nnd passenger business eastbeun 1 from
Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii
will, so far as possible, be billed and
ticketed through to tho East over the
Santa Fc. The tralllc arrangement, In
other words, will be not dlislmlbr to
that In effect between the Pacific Mall
and tbc Southern Pacific Company.
Tho officials of the lines mentioned
will not admit that n tralllc arrange
ment has been agreed upon, but It Is
regarded as most significant that piu
visions are being made In the new S.tn
ta Fe offices on Market street, to ac
commodate the passenger departments
of both the railroad and Btcamshlp
lines behind the same counter. The
tralllc arrnngement Is said to be tho
outgrowth of the friendly business re
lations established between the Spreck
els Interests and the Santa Fe manage
ment at the time the San Franc Isco .mil
San Joaquin Valley Railway wns sold
to the Santa Fc. Tho Santa Fo Is now
handling freight over Its own mils out
of Point Rkhmond, nnd will Inaugurate
Its passenger servlco on the first of
next month, so that then.' is nothlii'; to
binder the tralllc arrangement from go
ing Into effect Immediate!) exctp the
want of proper facilities, such as arc
enjojed uy the Southern Pacific nt the
Pacific Mall dock, for tho dlreit trans
fer of freight from ship to car. It Is
understood that the officials of (ho In
terested lines will give this matter
their attention In the very mar future.
