It Is only necessary to note the In
creasing number of fallureR In order to
know that a gold standard Is ruinous
to merchants and mnniifacturcrs.
From Mr. Uryan's Madison Square Gar
den speech August 12, 3S26.
Neer In the history of the United
States, except In the yenri 1SS0 nnd
1SS1, was there tuch n small number
or percentage of business (allures as
there was In 1899. IN THAT YEAR
THE NUMIJKIl OK FAILURES WAS
0,337. THE LOWEST SINCE 1883,
WHEN IT WAS 0.1S4. Tho total
amount of liabilities last cnr was $90,
S79.889, which was the lowest In any
year except two ears designated. Com
pare with this mngnin"ntirecoril the
record of 1S90, or 1893, or 1893
In 189C thero were 13,088 failures,
with t22G.09C.S34 liabilities. In 1893 the
number was 13.197, wl'h liabilities
amounting to $1773.190 Of 0 nnd In 1893
there were 15,212 fattuies with 34C,
779.889 liabilities.
"Ruinous to merchants nnd manufac
turers," said Mr. Ilryan. Let us sec.
In the first place, one. of the best In
dications of the condition of this class
of business men Is the fclze of their
bank account. For business deposits
the national banks nre used almost ex-
1 cluslvely by merchants and manufac-
I turers. In 1S9C the deposits In all the
I national banks of the United States
were JI.CSG.OOO.OOO. The jear follow-
I Ing McKlnley's election they Increased
to $1,708,000,000; In 1S98, they amount
ed to J2.078.000.000 and in 1899 they
Jumped to J2.003,0O0,OOO, nn Increase of
nearly one billion dollars In three
years, which means that the business
men were that much better off last
enr than they were In 1890.
Another demonstration of tho fallacy
of Mr. Uryan's prediction Is found In
the figures showing the exports of man
ufactured products during the last flc
5 cars. In 1890, the value of the manu
factures sent abroad was $228,571,178,
and this amount has boon nearly doub
led since.
