Columbus, O., March IC Seven men
robbed the Somerset lank at about 1:30
o'clock this morning. Only about (5000
In cash was taken, the robbers In their
hurry overlooking $3000 In gold coin
and $30,000 In bonds and time sccurl
ties. Three men worked In the bank
and four were stationed as sentinels
near by.
At the first explosion, Mr. Hayes, liv
ing opposite- thebank.carae out and was
met by n Kcntlncl who told him to get
hack Into the house If he, did not wont
his hend blown off. Mr. I.evett. an
other citizen, took four shots at the
robbers. These shots were (eturncd
and .a fusllade was kept up for somo
time. Armed citizens pursued the rob'
bers some distance north, the pollco
here notified and all near-by towns In
structed to keep u sharp lookout for the
robbers.
The sheriff of Perry county
nt New Lexington wa notified nna
drove to Somerset with his blood
hounds. The dogs readily took up tho
trail which led from a blacksmith shop
where thn tools were obtained, thence
to a mery stable and to the bank. Two
rigs had been stolen and after tho
robbers had driven nway, the onlccrs
wultcd for daylight Ui follow the wheel
tracks. A hard fight Is expected If the
li.-iiiil Is captured.
After the robbers had completed
Uiclr work, the men were lined. up In
slnslc file nnrt the leader gave the or
der, "All ready, forward march."
The robbers wero ns cool as soldiers
on dress parade, ine stolen norses
wero recovered about 4 o'clock, three
nnd a half miles from town, where they
had been nbandoned. The robbers wero
then making their way towards Hadley
Junction.
Tho bank at Somerset Is located In a
brick building andt he force of the ex
plosion blew out the entire front nnd
scattered debris all over (be street. The
bank Is a State Institution. Mr. Sam
uel lleam Is the president and A, II.
Ream the cashier. The loss Is fully
covered by Insurance. Tho bank Is not
crippled financially.
AN OPTICIAN ROBBED, '
An optician of the city who got Into
a friendly game with some of his
friends the other night, complained at
the police station Monday that he had
had stolen from him n pocket book con
taining $70. The dctccthes Btnrtcd out
at once nnd the pocket book was found
outside the store of the optician on
upper Fort street.
It Is thought that the pocket book
was stolen while the optician w-ai
asleep In his room, on of his "friends"
from whom he had won quite a good
deal of money being the suspected one.
J. W. LUNING DEAD,.
In n I.os Angeles dispatch of March
20 is contained the nnounccment of
the death of J. W. I.unlng, well known
to nil Honolulu people. Mr. I.unlng
spent the better part of his life In Ho
nolulu, carrying on the business of a
collector on Kaahumami street. De
ceased was a character about town, al
ways ready with a pleasant word of
greeting for everyone he happened to
know nnd always willing to stop and
exchange a few words In n pleasant
vein. Mrs. I.unlng was with her liun
band to the last.

rcvenuo Act have been received by tho
local revenue office. In order to cor
rect nny erroneous Ideas among cer
tain classes of business men, the Col
lector makes the following statement
"Tho special taxes and various de
tails concerning liquor, cigars and to
bacco, do not belong to the war revenue
act nt all. Tho special taxes on.whole-
sale nnd retail liquor dealers, cigar
manufacturers, rectifiers, etc., remain
unchanged. They belong to Internal
revenue nets of much earlier date.
The Act of March 2, amended the
war lovcnuo law of 189S, only."

VI2NTURA IN PAST TIME.
After being delayed many hours in
Sydney and Auckland the steamer Ven
tura arrived here this morning 15 days
7 hours and 48 minutes from the Colo;
files. At Sydney she was delayed In
itio action of the dock laborers, who
refused to work on St. Patrick's day
end wero only Induced to do so by tho
payment to them of 1.25 an hour. As
It was the vessel left short of coal and
will be delayed here until late tonight
In coaling.
At Auckland Ahc Ventura was quar
antined, as she came from Sydney,
where a case of plague had occurred
several days before she sailed. At tht
New Zealand city they would not al
low her to go to the wharf and she was
delayed about fifteen hours taking
freight In lighters. Her actual steam
ing time from Sydney wns 14 days 1
hour. During tho wholo trip fine
weather was experienced, and her
many passengers had a most enjoyable
voyage.
In leaving hero sho will bo crowded
to her full capacity, and from tho time
sho was alongsldo the wharf this
morning, until this afternoon, t'urser
Bucknam was besieged by Intending
passengers who all wanted to bo fixed
up for the trip to San Francisco.
