The launching of the Shamrock has
a local significance because of a depar
ture In naval architecture which Is
hinted at In the "snub-nosed' phrase, i
says n writer In the New Orleans
'ln.na.l1A..u...l f..nn la. n ..n..,!..
man in New Orleans who has probably
cvohed the same system out on paper, i
or, at least, a part of It, and the refer- j
ence to the boat s bow as a snub-noso
would Indicate that at Ic.iHt the samo
fundamental had been nhsenrd.
Ills name Is M. F. .Million, and ho
lives In Franco street. Ho has watched
with Increasing concern the changes In
naval architecture, and has worked i
out and patented a system of hull eon-1
strucllon which he believes Is destined1
to revolutionize the old method of boat
building. Doats built after his plan
could be called snub-nosed, and because
ot other facts connected with the con
struction ot the Shamrock some of his
friends believe that tho principles set
out In his patented formula were ob
served In tho construction ot the
yacht. The Shamrock Is built after a
new fashion, nnd the chnnccs nro that
the yacht In many ways will resemble
the Million design.
Tho system of hull construction vat
rntcd by the New Orleans Inventor is
based upon the principle ot focal dis
placement and replacement of the wa
ter along parabolic branches. Actually
the bow of the bo.it would have the
appearance 01 h nuuu nuu. i nu inn-)
losopby of the plan Is to reduce the
percentage of rcslstiinro nnd give the I
vessel tho full benefit of tho propelling
energies. Natural law has been fol
lowed In-the design. The natural ten
dency of waves Is to describe n para
bola In their rolling from the point of
disturbance. Frjulllar examples are
found In the case of an ordinary boat.
The divergencies uro more striking
whero the vessel is ulloat on a smoothly
surfneed, calm body of water. The
architecture of tho fish If It may be
called aichltccture Is an adherence to
tho parabolic principle. Tho movement
of comets furnishes an example In na
ture of the samo principle. These In
stances might Iw multiplied indefinite
ly, and tho new principle which has
given birth to snub-nosed naval archi
tecture Is based upon these natural ex
amples. In fact, It Is claimed, nnd ac
cepted by many, "that thero Is not an
Instance In nature where forward mo
tion encounters resistance where the
parabolic branch Is not established."
This Is proUlbly tho principle which
has been observed In the construction
of the Shamrock.
The result will be to minimize the re
slating forco and to rcduco the wnvo
tonnage, which has always been looked
upon ns n considerable factor. The
displacement of tho water, and allow
ing It to run along In Its natural way,
UI result In a reduction ot tho amount
of power needed In propelling purposes.
and If applied to nil kinds of craft it Is
claimed that this saving would amount
to anywhere from 2.i to i& por rent. In
the case of ordinary vessels, where fuel
Is used, tho saving would bc-coiislder-
In tho caso of sailing vessels It would
