YOUNG CONGER ARRESTED
San Francisco, Aug. 1C lloy V.
Conger, a nephew of the United States
Minister to China, was arrested yester
day on complaint of V. 11. Gilbert,
piesldent of the Ullbert Publishing Co.,
on nccuunt of a debt of 550.uu. Con
ger's engagement to Miss (Irmo Filch,
uaughtcr of Colonel henry S, Filch,
was announced a few dajs ngo, and It
was then stntcd that Immediately upon
his nrrlval here this week from Hono
lulu the wedding would take place. The
plan was that after a short trip to
Monterey joung Mr. Conger nnd his
bride would f,o East and to England.
The happiness of tne joiing couple was
somewnnt marred by Hie iiiTalr of yes
terday.
When Conger reached (his city, Gil
bert demanded n settlement, but failed
to obtain It, A suit against Conger
lor J550.30 for money due from him
wns begun yesterday, nnd nn order of
arrest was procured from Judge Dunne.
Gilbert stntcd In his affidavit that Con
ger, when presented with the hill, ic
