to make good their claims to a monop-

government, and establish the conten

very small portion of the community.
This has been possible because officials
of the Mainland had no occasion, nor
took tlie.trouble to look Into the facts
of tho situation.
Hut times have changed.
With annexation this cause for Indif

This last fight has been sifted to the
bottom nnd the first result Is a sting

Slates.
And finally the decision Is reached by
tho President that the whole Territor

Wo bopo thu Government will not al

for tho mnlntennncu of tho San Fran
flsro mail service The renewal year

undoubtedly become tho most popular
of all tho existing "arouud tho-world"

that when tho servlco Is placed upon

As n mall route for Now Zeala.ni! the

quite unsurpassable, It Is unturtunate
that mishaps to tho now steamers
arising largely through tho huirlod

disappointment. But notwithstanding

with 40.3U davs tiy the I', v o., and

trom Auckland, nnd about seven from
Dunedln. Now Zealand possesses now
a faster mnil delivery with Londou
that Sydney linn. Tlio Federal sop

Orient steamers, Is on a 33ciiays' ba

Now that tho delects In tho engines of

died, thn tlmo to London will bo re
duced to twenty-six tinys. From three
or four months the ordinary tlmo for
Intercommunication with tho home
country In tho early days wo havo
come down to three and a half weeks.
Commeiclnlly, . is imposslblo to rate
such a service as this, performed ev
ery three weeks, too highly1, and tho
colony should bo prepared tb pay a
liberal subsidy for Its malutonanrc.
Whllu wo cannot but reglet that tho
