One of the sailors of the Ilrltlsh ship
Lord Shaftesbury jumped overboard
as tho vessel was rounding lha light
house yesterday morning and was pick
ed up by a tmall boy In a boat and
taken ashore. The sailor was one ot
the men who deserted the ship several
days ago and was only returned aboard
yestcrdny morning Just before the ves
sel sailed.
To the lad who picked him up ho
stated that he did not want to remain
longer with th evessel as he was paid
but $10 a month and badly fed. As
he clambered Into the small boat ho
waved farewell to Captain Hendrlck
sen who was standing on the poop
deck and passed the compliments ot
1 lie day with him, wishing him and tho
rest of the crew a pleasant voyage and
prosperous new year, In language fami

the late home, at the corner of Nuuanu
nnd Judd streets yesterday afternoon.
I The services were very simple, accord
ing to the request of the family of tho
deceased. "Light after Darkness" was
sung by n double quartet and then Rev.
Wm. Morris Klncnld read selections
from the Scriptures, finishing with a
prayer.
The funeral procession to the Nuu
nnu cemetery was an exceedingly largo
one. At the grave "Jesus, Lover of
My Soul" was sung by the double quar
tet after which came tho committment
services by Rev. W. M. Klncald. The
services closed with the singing of
"Shall We Gather at the River."
The pall bearers were as follows:

ACCIDENT ON WliLCIf.
Second mate Cleary of the bark An
drew Welch met with a painful acci
dent yesterday morning while putting
out cargo. He was standing on the
vessel's deck when a sting of hay
bales was being hoisted out of th.
hatch. On Its way up when quite a dis
tance above the ship one of the bales
slipped and fell striking Cleary on the
head breaking his nose and badly
lacerating his forehead nnd head. One
of his eyes was nearly gouged out.
Captain D,cw had the Injured man
promptly removed to the Queen's Hos
pital where his Injuries were attended
to. It will be several weeks before
Cleary Is able to be about on the ship
again. The physician who treated tho
man says It Is a great wonder that ho
was not killed or that his right eye was
not put out as the skin on the right
side of tho face about the eye was
pulled off for several Inches.

Manuel Rodrlgues, driver of the Pain
tramcar that was robbed of Its cash
box at the Walklkl terminus Saturday
night, visited Camp McKlnley In the
hopes pt Identifying the three persons
who did the Job. The driver says he Is
sure that the box was takpn by the
soldiers as they wcro the only one on
tne car at the time of the disappear
ance of the money container. How
ever, the driver was unable to Identify
his men and so the matter has gono
over for the time being.
In the meantime, the soldiers at tho
camp are very angry at Rodrlgues on
account of his nctlon and there was
some talk last evening of an attempt
to mob him. He had the last car out to
the Walklkl terminus last night and he

London's Misleading Street Names.
In connection with the London
County Council's colossal list of streets
end places within Its Jurisdiction, just
Ifsued, It Is worth nothing that things
are not always what they seem In Lon
don street names. You may easily bo
too facile In tracing etymologies. Peer
less street, off the city road, Is named
after Peerless Pool, which, however,
U a corruption of Perilous Pool. Got
den square was originally Gelding
square, and the name was changed at
the wish of the Inhabitants. Fetter
lane has nothing to do with tetters,
but only with fewtors (Idle fellows),
who once loafed In the neighborhood.
Gutter lane, in the city. Is really Guth
eron's lane. Duck's-foot lane, near
Cannon street, should be Duke's Foot
lane, being so named after the Dukes
of Suffolk, who lived here at the Manor
of the Rose. Cannon street has noth
ing to do with guns, but everything to
do with candles, which were made In
It when It passed as Candelwick street.
Kensington, for Instance, has only
lately been proved to have no connec
tion whatever with Kynlng's or King's
Town, but to be a corruption of Ken
sing's Town, the tribe of tho Ken
slngas having owned It In Saxon times.
Knight's Urldgo again, owes its name
to no romantic knight's tale, but la
the fact that tlieio was once a brldgo
over the Westbourne, In the manor of
Neyte. Kentish Town, far from estab
lishing a connection with Kent, Is
merely a reminiscence of the River
Ken, which once llowed through it,
and gave It the name of Ken Ditch
Town. Even Charing Cross, we aro re
luctantly forced to admit, has nothing
to do with the soapy occupation that
is followed by middle-aged ladles for
fourpenco an hour and their meals.
