ADVICE TO YOUNG BASEBALL PLAYERS
BY CONNIE MACK,
Manager of the Philadelphia American League Club.
Players Should Learn to Throw the Body Away From the Fielder.
Lines of Travel.
Mere speed will not make a good base runner, but all other things being
equal, the fastest runner will be the most successful on the bases. Too much
attention cannot be paid to sprinting. When training In the spring tho
player Instead of Jogging n mile or two to lmproe his wind, should practice
sprinting. Wind Is nn absolute necessity In base running. If a player li
short winded he will tiro perceptibly by the time he renches third base, pro
lded he clears two or more bases at the same time. The majority of play
ets In spring training work moro with tho view of reducing superfluous flesh
than Improving their speed and strengthening their wind. It Is a good thing
to do plenty of road work. It hardens the muscles, and It should bo kept up
for n time, but when the muscles arc sndlclcntly hardened tho player should
conllno himself to sprinting not long sprints, but twenty or thirty ynrds.
Fifteen minutes' prnctlco of this work will make a great Improvement In a
player, nnd enable him to travel much faster than he otherwise would do.
H.ise sliding Ib nn nit acquired by but few. A straight dive for tho baso
Is easy of accomplishment, but it Is the object of nil good base sliders to fool
the fieldl-and prevent a put out. Aplajer who can slide well will often save
himself from being put out by the baseman. It often happens that a player
In trying to reach tils base will And the ball perhaps ten feet ahead of him.
lnthls case. Instead of diving straight for the bag or resigning himself to his
fate, he will dlvo for the b.ise, but throw his body on ono side out ot the
innge of tho baseman's reach, thus avoiding being touched with the ball. To
the spectators who Invariably watch tho ball and-not the player, the latter
It thought to lie out, nnd when the umpire calls "safo." the onlookers will
often send up n howl of protest nnd dcuslon. The player who has been fooled
by the runner will often enter a protest and assert he touched his man. On
the other hand, the umpire will frequently err nnd call a runner out when
he Is not touched.
This happens when the slide Is so perfect and such a clever piece of work
that Its accomplishment deceives tho umpire ns well ns the spectators. Then
the I miner is heard from, but the umpire gives him but little satisfaction, and
the i miner Is declared out.
