Editor Evening Bulletin I beg re
spectfully to call jour attention to a
glaring misstatement in your account
of the late visit of the Board of Health
to the leper settlement Mentioning
the tuatua remedy, jou saj "It ap
pears that this remcil) Is no new thing
In the settlement, it having been tried
there already three jears ago" Who
ever Is responsible lor this statement
has evidently confounded the lepei
settlement with the Kalihl Receiving
Station; as it Is about three jears ago
that the tuatua remedy was first
brought to the notice of the then
Hoard of Health, and a spasmodic at
tempt at treatment was made at said
station, the history of which Jias been
published to often that It Is unneccfc
tarj for me to repeat It here After
that fiasco, no further notice was tak
en of the matter, until It was brought
to public attention once more li the
publication of the now celebrated case
in Tahiti, and I will vendue to sa
that it Is m firm belief that, had It
not been for the agitation of the sub
ject In the newspnpers of Honolulu
itarted by the above eate no further
trial of the remedy would have been
made bj the Hoard of Health. As for
the remedj having been tried hero, 1
wish to say that 1 have lived In the
settlement for over fifteen years, and
have been cognizant of every attempt
at treatment of any sort that has been
made during that time, and If nnj at
tempt had been made to introduce the
tuatua treatment, 1 should cerulni)
havn known of It, and been one of tho
first to make application for It. So t
can say confidently that the first at
tempt to Introduce the tuatua treat
ment here In the settlement, was that
made by Dr Oliver about three montln
before he was retired. I myself receiv
ing my first supply on tho 15th ot
March of the present jtar, and taking
it steadllj up to the time Dr. Oliver
left. There are other points In jour
account that I mls-lit touih upon, but
I think this one Is enough for this time.
Yours for the truth,
WA1MANU.
