Records Of. American
Gunboats In
Lead
: For several years the Navy Depart ,
ment has not regarded it as good pol
icy to acauaint foreign nations with
the performance of the American
naval gunners. . It was felt that tho
publication of & good record made by
our men would only serve to stimu
late the gunners of other navies to
better their own performances, which ,
lu turn would require additional effort
on the ?art of the American gunners
to maintain their superiority. But tha
publication recently of the fact that
during target practice of the Channel
nquadron, in the presence of King Ed
ward, one gun made nineteen hits in
twenty-one shots, theeby earning a
decoration from the King, naturally . .
has touched the pride of some of tho
American gun-pointers during the an
rual target practice, just closed, and
have no reason to fear a comparison
with the gunners of any other navy.
Of course the fact that the import
ant elements of speeded calibre of gun
are lacking in the report of the British
performance, makes it difficult to ar
rive at an exact comparison, but Iiom
I he number of shots fired, it is as
sumed that the British gun was r.ot
more than six 'nches in callhro and
probably less.
Taking some of the slx-'.ach guns i$
the Atlantic fleet, one gunner (m the '
armored cruiser Maryland, made elev
en shots and eleven hits in one min
ute. A gun on the battleship Ohio was
fired with a perfect score at -.he rate
of 10.81 per minute, a six-inch gun im
the battleship Maine has a. re:ord of
perfect score at a rate of 10.41 per
minute, and . the battles'! iy .MNsoiurs
test record was 10.30 shots per :iinule,
each lodged in a target. ',
But in the way of small gun's, these f
six-inch records become insignificant. 0
A thrnn.nniiiiNor nn tha hntrlnuhln Vir
ginia made twenty shots and twenty
hits in seventy-five seconds, and an
other gun made ten shots and ten hits ...
in twenty-two and one-half seconds, a
remarkable average of 26.67 shots per
minute. ' . " y
