of steam vessels for Hawaii, arrived
by the last Alameda nnd have opened
offices In rooms 2fTto .10 of tho Young
building. J. J. Sullivan Is tho clerk
of the board, which Is now ready for
business on nil occasions.
Messrs. Howo nnd Lehners come to
the Islands as i result of the appro
priation Item secured by Dclcgnto
Kuhlo from the last Congress estab
lishing a local office for the steam
vessel Inspectors. Hitherto tho In
spectors from tho San Krniiclsco of
fice have como to the city onco each
j ear nnd nil Inspections and all ex
aminations for master's papers had
to wait their nrilval. Now Inspec
tions nnd examinations may be held
at any time.
The Inspectors come from the San
Francisco district office, of which this
Is n sub-station or branch. Captain
HoVc was the first Inspector for the
Philippines ami afterwards was su
perintendent of tho revenue cuttor
service of those Islands. Mr. Lehn
ers, who is tho engineer of'the Hoard,
has been hero before and hag been
tho local Inspector for the Alaskan
district.
