ARMY FURNISHED
ICE CHEAPEST
i
That Hawaii furnishes t'nele Sam
with the cheapest Ice In the whole
army was ascertained this morning, '
when bids for the Ice supply of the
department for the coming fHcnl yenr
were opened by the depot commissary, ,
Captain I), II. Case. Ainsuit Under,
Ltd., bidding for the Oahu lee Co,
was the low bidder, the llgure being I
15 cents per hundred pounds for "Ice
plain," meaning unprotected by pack- !
Ing. The llgure for Ice packed In bur- I
lap nnd rice bulls was 20 cents per
hundred. i
There were two other bidders, the
Hawaiian Electric Co. and tlfe ll.irn- ,
hart Ice Co., but their figures were not
made public. The present year's con
tract Is held by the Ilawnllnu Electric
Co. at 1C 1-2 cents.
"This Is n low llgure compared with
wbnt Ice costs the nrmy In other
places." said Captain Case. "In Chi
cago the nrmy had to pay 25 cents,
and there nre poits where It goes as
high as 75 cents or a dollar. In tin

The Ice consumption In tho depart

SPRECKELS WILL
CASE FINALLY
SEHLED
N'ews from the Coast Is to tho ef
fect that the Hpreckels will case Is
finally settled, after the two losing
brothers In the ilgbt had made legal
elTorts to reopen It. The following is
from the Hun Frnnclsco Chronicle:
HACItA.MENTO, Cal. May G. The
will of the late Clans Hpreckels, ulilcli
gives Clans A., ltudolpli and Emmii,
three, of the children, J5.0U0.OOO of the
estate, will go Into effect May 10 In
accordance with the recent order of
the Supreme Court following that tri
bunal's action here today In denying u
motion of John I. and Adolpb, two '
oilier sons, to huve appeals from the
Hupreme Court of Han Francisco dis
missed. Thu uppeals weru from a de
cision of tho lower court, which de
clared the will was Invalid. On A.irll
27 tho Supreme Court reversed this
decision, thereby allowing three of tho
children, Clans A., Rudolph and Emma,
to sharo the $5,000,000 residue of tho
estate.
Tho argument on today's motions
was charaeterlxed by a slight sugges
tion of heut on the part of the attor
neys. Peter V. Donne of Kan Fran
cisco represented John I), and Adolph
Hpreckels, who wished the appeal from
the lower court dismissed. Charles
Wheeler, also of Han Francisco, rep
resented tho three children who nro
the benellclarles In the will. Tho lat
ter described the opposing side's ac
tion In bringing this motion, nfter Hit
.Supreme Court ulready had passed
upon thn point It again bruught up, us
"absolute audacity."
It seems, another suit has been
brought by Dunne's clients for n dif
ferent division of tin estate, despite
thu ruling of th Hupreme Court that
the will Is valid. Chief Justlco Utility,
In announcing tho denial of Dunne's
motion, said It was the unanimous
opinion of thu court that there wus nu
merit In tbe action. The court sat en
bane.
