It is estimated that from twelve to fifteen thousand people arrived in Kan sas t-'ity Thursday and tbe day before from various points in Indiana Ohio and Pennsylvania. The travelers were all ennui te to Kiinsax and some thirty or forty car loads have passed through this city on the: Santa Fe road during the past forty-eight hours. Tha board of regents of the State Normal school were to have met in this city Thursday, but failed to get a quorum. An informal meeting com posed of Mi-Mrs. Mtirdock. Crichton and Wright was held at which the regit lar biennial report was taken up and passed upon. Gen. One of the most pitiable objects of bu- manity we have ever met, is a deaf and dumb man who has been in Em poria for some time trying to earn his living by blacking lioots. The unfor tunate man, in audition to the depriva tion of speech and hearing, has been so unfortunate as to lose one leg at the hip. With a peucil he informed us a nay or two ago that he is sleeping in n stable and iu reply lo a question us to whether he needed anything replied that he would try to support himself by black ing gents Ixiots. The following from that wide awake I little journal, Iho Madison News, is duly appreciated : The publishers of Tiik Emporia ijaily ikwi, with characteristic ener. gy and commendable enterprise, have succeeded in making the Daily News t ho moBt reliable, newsy, and altogether the most valuable dailv paper mailable to the people of the Verdigris valley. I.KaiiHua City a fact that stock men of the Verdigris valley cannot afford to overlook. A sargeant or the U. . A., who wa with Major Oflley's command of two hundred men and camped near the scene of the recent killing of an Indian by young Jackson in Colorado, was in town Saturday, and in reply to inquiries as to the real truth of the matter stated that young Jackson was drunk at the time he shot the Indian, and that tho latter did nothing whatever to provoke trouble. He spoke in the highest terms of agent Berry, and says the Uncompah gre Utes are all peaceably disposed, have large herds of stock and. are amply ablo to take care of themselves. Maj. OlHey, with his command, was marching under orders and could not take any part in the affray without violating orders and laying himself liable to court martial. Tim idea prevails to some extent that police judge Bachellrr is defaulter in the sum or several hundred dollars, Kinds Collected and not paid over to the city treasury. This impression has origin ated from a report recently made by he city attorney to the council, by which it was shown that none of the fines collect ed had been paid into the treasury. Mr. Iamlert informs us that no charge of defalcation is made against Mr. Bach el kr, but the question simply is whether the police judge shouli audit and pay his own claims for tees, or whether the money collected should lie paid into the city treasury and the claims of the police judge audited by the council, as in the case of other salaries and claims against the city. Il U lo settle th'.s point of ltw that the council baa authorized suit to Ik: brought against Mr. Bacheller for the recovery of money collected by him. Lacteal fluid concentrated from this substance must have a delicious flavor indeed. Milk is necessarily pro- it need from tlie food which the cow eats from day to day, and we venture to say, that if cow owners nnd milk drinkers could watch the poor creatures from morning till nighl and sec all the articles which arc to Iks used in compounding tueir evening bowl of milk, they would refuse to drink it and tell the childien "don't, it's uasty!" There are a good many cases of cpl- zoot in town. We will have either gas or the elec tric light soon. We have no telephone system yet, but we have several ladies church societies. The magnificent crop of weeds in the city parks appears to be ripe enough to crib. The Flotel Cool id ge is enclosed and will be ready for plastering in a few days. The attendance of students at the Nor mal school is steadily increasing. The enrollment now reaches almost three hundred. The question now is, who cot up Lock- crman's diseased cattle and served them to the public t There is a heavy penalty for such woik. We know a school teacher, who sells it beaf. We do Dot know whether he got any of Lockerman's latent improved 'big jaw" or not. There ia no one who does not like to hear money riug, therefore tverybaHiy in the city should put a piece into the new bell. Its tones will not have any pecu liar interest to you unless you do. Since the publication of our item about the butchering of diseased cattle, there has been a marked diminution in the beef bills of the boarding boum; keepers, and an extensive inquiry for sheep and hog meat. Frederick, Esq., of Medaryville, In diana, a brother of O. W. Frederick, of this city. The two "boys" had not met before in twenty-four years, and the meeting was indeed a joyous one. Mr. James Milliken from Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, brother of Robert Milli ken, of this city, came in with the east' ern excursionists to visit his brothers here and at McPhersou. Mr. M. is much pleased with this wet ion of Kan sas. General D. E. Clapp, a regent of the state Normal school gave us a pleasant call Friday. Wc were glad to see that he has been re-elected a member of the house from Woodson county. He will undoudtcdly be a useful as well as a prominent tucmlier of that body. Mr. C. C. Mr. Grant is an ener getic young man, possessed of those qualities of head and heart which go to make up the good citizen and genial companion, tns many iricnds in i.m poria regret to lose him from society and will gladly welcome him back, at any future time. We acknowle-dgo . a pleasant call from F. F. Diusmore, county superin- leudent elect of Douglas county. Mr. Diusmore is at present representing, the Moslcr Safe and Lock Co., but next Jan. uary will take Sarah Brpwn'a place among the officials of his county. Mr. Uinsmore held the otlicc or superin tendent preceding "Miss Brown's term, but was defeated in 1878 through the apathy of his friends, who thought his election so sure that they did not make the extra efforts necessary to offset Miss Sarah's strenuous canvass. CIIUKCH TOPICS. At the meeting of the Emporia minis terial association held last Monday, it was decided that 7 o'clock, be the hour for Sunday evening service during the winter months. The community will take due notice and be governed accord ingly. On Thanksgiving day, 23th inst., un. ion services win be Held in the I'resby- terian church at 11 o'clock. The ser mon will be preached by the Rev. Mr. Tomlinson, of the Baptist church. The music will be under the direction of the choir of the Presbyterian church. The Pleasant Hour Club gave the first 'assembly" of its second annual season of parties Friday evening at Jay's hall. An invitation had been extended to the "Pleasure Seekers," who, with the oth ers, made the goodly number in attend- ance about fifty couples. The music, furnished by Holmes' orchestra of four pieces, was excellent. Among the selec tions played was the new "Pleasant Hours Quadrille," composed by Prof. Pettee, of Emporia, the annoucement of which was received with plaudits. The club this season ia under the good man agement of Messrs. J. W. Murphy, Dan McDonald and Albert Plienis. The party dispersed at a seasonable hour just be fore midnight closing a very auspicious opening for the winter season. A Compliment to ... of oar new Citi seas. D. II Grand Mistake. Lyon county possesses the champion, double-faced hyprocaite of the universe. The name is the Sentinel ediloral column, nnd its den is in Emporia First, T. N. Sedgwick never stopped with Hon. J. W. Loy, Monday evening before election. Second, was not asked by T. N. S., to vole for him; neither did Hon. J. W. Loy influence any in favor of T. N. S:, and no $3 was offered by any one. His neighbor Republicans never acused him .of such charge the d:iy of election. We believe it is the mo6t gluttonous lie the Sentinel could ever have told, or can ever tell in its notori ous lies, and as for Hon. J. W., wc can say there has never a man discharged ins duties more nonestiy ana uprigiitiy than he in all his business transaction No one but he who wants to lie, and makes that his trade, can say auvtliing dishonorable of him- A cit izen of Lyon county, a true temperance man and good christian, he has done more for Americus than ail ins opposing clique, and is well honored bv all except the Van Eruan Miller Keno tribe. Justice, Americus, Indignant That . our people should feel a good deal of indignation over the discovery a few days ago that several head of dis eased cattlo had been butchered here, and probably retailed in the community, is not at all surprising. The announce nient- has created a good deal of a stir among butchers as well as others. We met Mr. Lockerman on the street yester day, nnd he told us that it had been a common thing here to butcher such cat tie for tho last two years. This state ment will not tend to allay the feeling on the matter, now that it is up. Wo believe a thorough investigation of tho subject should be made, and Ihc parties who arc guilty of BUch an outrage se verely dealt with. Tbe Clook and HelL The tickets for the subscription to "the.clock and bell fund" were present ed before it was decided to purchase a clock. Everybody seems anxious to have a clock and there seems to be con siderable interest manifested. Some of the citizens offer to subscribe from f 5 to $30 if a clock is put on the building with the bell. The calculation now is to put both a bell and clock on the build ing and from the liberaliity with which the citizens are subscribing, the ncccs sary funds will be raised. Correspond ence is being made with the different manufacturing companies and as soon as figures are obtained the public will know. Angora Goats. Mr. B. Allen, of Indendence, Kansas, had in Emporia this week a herd of ninety cashmere goats which he had pur chased in Colorado. They were valued at $800, and were nearly all pure stock. Mr. Allen desired to dispose or them here, but being a new thing to our stock men, no one seemed to have any disposi tion to take hold of them. They are very beautiful animals, and are said to be exceedingly profitable. The ewes are very prolific, bearing trom two to three kids every season, there being three sea sons in the course of every two years that is, the increase from each ewe amounts to from six to nine kids every two years. The wool, aver aging from two to three pounds to each animal. Bells at from 85 cents to $1.15 per pound. Their meat is held in high favor by those using it, and it would seem that before long wool raisers in this section must sec the profits from dealing in this kind of stock. Their hardiness is proverbial, the goat being only second to to the ostrich in the pow ers of its digestive apparatus. Mr. Allen on Wednesday started with his herd for Independance, where he can be address ed by any one desirous of purchasing goals. Ledger. Affidavits from Batchers.
