Board of Health Reqnests Clean Rest Rooms Florida State Board of Health working through local health de partments will redouble its efforts to see that filling stations maintain clean rest rooms, David B. Dee, chief sanitary engineer declared here today. “The State Board of Health is charged by law with the inspection of rest rooms and the enforcement of the law which makes It manda tory for such places to be sanitary,” he pointed out. “All county sani tarians have been urged to tighten up on their routine inspection to see that the required high standards of cleanliness are being maintain ed.” “Clean rest rooms are vitally nec essary, primarily for the protection of the public’s health, “Mr. Dee emphasised, "but, they are also nec essary if establishments are to make good ‘first” impressions on their customers.” “Heavy traffic in Florida this time of year makes it even more important for operators to keep a watchful eye on the cleanliness of their rest rooms.” he said. According to a recent protest about sanitary' conditions in rest rooms made by the American Auto mobile Association, “reports from all over the country indicate that pub lic indignation is growng over the increasing number of littered, spat tered dank and ill-smelling rooms that are provided for the ‘conven ience’ of the public.” “These ‘discomfort’ stations and ‘unrest’ rooms frequently have stopped up plumbing, broken water faucets, dirt-encrusted wash bowls, soapless dispensers and a total lack of paper towels and tissue, and some of them are infested with all manner of crawling and winged creatures. The State Board of Health joins the AAA in its plea to owners and operators of filling stations to take immediate recourse backed up by soap and water, paint and disinfec tant and ‘some elbow grease’, regu larly and vigorously applied.” However, Mr. Dee stressed very strongly the need for the public to cooperate with filling station oper ators not only by reporting dirty rest rooms but by helping keep rest rooms clean. “Entirely too many persons who use these public rest rooms leave them in such condition as to be un fit for use by the next customer.” he pointed out. White South Africans have begun an exodus the second great trek experienced by the country in 100 years—desig ed to escape the rapidly growing threat of a race-baiting, anti-British dictatorship. The government across the bor ders is of a degree and began last June when Gen. Jan Christian Smuts’ United Party lost the elec tion by the slight margin of five parliamentary seats. Within five months, nearly 4,000 White South Africans have made the trek to Southern and Northern Rhodesia, Nyasaland. Tangunyike. Kenya, and even Australia, Ameri ca and the United Kingdom. South African businessmen, alarmed by this exodus which they believed is the beginning of something big point out that only 3.000 Whites tinations last year. The White pop ulation of the Union numbers less left permanently for the same des than 2,500,000. Many of those leaving are fearful that a disastrous dictatorship is be ginning to function. When Malan’s party swept into power, most op ponents shrugged and muttered “A fluke victory and he won’t be in for long." The opinion prevails they are not sure now. The new government, cautious at first, spent a lot of time planning how to bolster its ranks. At the next session of parliament in Janu ary. threatened legislation affecting Indian, native, colored and South west African votes may give the Party a large working majority. Fitted in with the shifting-popu lation groups, is a suggestion made by two cubinet members for the ad ministration of the government's “aparthold” policy. It has been pro posed that every person In the country including White, Black, male, female, ndult and children be registered. This will give the gov ernment a complette file by which to regulate the segregation t>f races. Most important is your voice and speech.
