I’ve Been Thinking
„ —_ BY CAB CALLOWAY
Feller by the name of McCarthy
has taken a mightly old bandwagon
and dressed it up fit to kill . . .
and McCarthy is getting a whale of
a lot of publicity for his time. Now,
I’m not one to dabble in politics be
cause I’ll admit very frankly that I
don’t know an awful lot about' such
things.
But I do know this. Senator Mc-
Carthy is calling everyone within
range a Red, yet when it comes to
proving his allegations, Mac doesn’t
seem to have very much to say. He
says that the evidence is all in a
flock of secret government files
which he hasn’t seen vei.
That’s a little like spanking your
small son or daughter for getting
a bad report card before you know
what the report card says. It might
be a little embarassing if you spank
ed your heir this week and then he
brought home all A’s on his report
card next week.
Senator McCarthy will possibly
feel the same way when, as seems
almost certain, most of the people
he has called ‘Comie’ are proved to
be upstanding and loyal American
citizens. But McCarthy is getting a
lot of mileage out of what everyone
thought was a worn-out bandwagon.
If he is proved wrong on all counts
he'll still be a national hero in the
minds of the bigots of the land, of
which, unfortunately, there are
. many.
And so this feller McCarthy rants
on and on, making his scrapbook
the envy of the boys in the Senate
locker room. And no matter what

is proved, a lot of citizens are going
to have a hard time clearing their
names after the damaging sword of
congressional immunity is wrested
from McCarthy’s fist.
McCarthy’s getting a heck of a
press . . . and the nation is losing
a lot of prestige on foreign soil
where the American game of poli
tics isn’t understood too well. And
a lot of citizens are having their
eyes blackened before the great ma
jority of our population which be
lieves everything it reads in the
papers, regardless of their political
affiliations.
But to real ‘thinking’ Americans,
I believe the McCarthy episode will
be seen as comparable to »n inci
dent in my own early childhood.
I was indignant with a group of
tykes about my own age for some
thing they had said or done and,
since I was standing by a mud
puddle, I decided to seek solace by
pelting them with dark, ozzy mud.
Well, the upshot of the whole thing
was that I tossed mud right and
left, but I didn't do any damage at
all. I was either high, wide or some
thing. But in the end I was far from
handsome. In the course of all my
mud slinging I hadn't gotten any
mud on anyone else, but I wasa mess
—mud from head to foot.
•
So beware Mac. You might get
some of that mud on you, at least
in the eyes of sincere, thinking
Americans. Os course it is possible
that McCarthy knows more than
he’s saying, but if he doesn’t, it’s
a mighty dirty campaign. Mighty
dirty, indeed.
